This beautiful iridescent slime mould - Lamproderma ‘aff’ muscorum - is probably an undescribed species. It appeared on a large bryophyte-covered log, i.e. a log covered in mosses and leafy liverworts. The Lamproderma is on the leafy liverwort Lepidozia that according to my friend studying the group, is also undescribed. These represent the SMELLIEST little land aliens I’ve ever seen - and one of my all-time favorite discoveries in nature! I love how this photo displays the beginning and end stages of fungal growth. This is Clathrus ruber – a species of fungus in the stinkhorn family.  It is commonly known as the “latticed stinkhorn,” the “basket stinkhorn,” or the “red cage,” alluding to the striking fruit bodies that are shaped like a round or oval hollow sphere with interlaced or latticed branches. ✨ - The fungus is saprobic, feeding off decaying woody plant material, and is often found alone or in groups in leaf litter on garden soil, grassy places, or on woodchip garden mulches. - Although considered primarily a European species, C. ruber has been introduced to other areas, and now has a wide distribution that includes northern Africa, Asia, Australia, and North and South America. - The fruit body initially appears like a whitish "egg" attached to the ground at the base by cords called “rhizomorphs.” The egg has a delicate, leathery outer membrane enclosing the compressed lattice that surrounds a layer of olive-green spore-bearing slime called the “gleba,” which contains high levels of calcium that help protect the fruit body during development. - As the egg ruptures and the fruit body expands, the gleba is carried upward on the inner surfaces of the spongy lattice, and the egg membrane remains as a volva around the base of the structure. The gleba has a fetid odor, somewhat like rotting meat, which attracts flies and other insects to help disperse its spores.  The fruit body can reach heights of up to 7.9 in. SUPER neat-o! Many mushrooms have special and unusual characteristics, and this one certainly would be high on that list.  The common name of this very small fungus is Bird's nest, because that is exactly what it looks like.  Those little white "eggs" (scientific name peridioles) are attached to the inside of the cup with thin strands.  Bird's nest fungi have a fascinating way of spreading their spores.  When raindrops splash into the cup, they hit the "eggs", which are then expelled out of the "nest" and latch onto twigs, leaves, and other things using those strands.  In the new location, the "eggs" open up to release their spores, thus helping to spread the fungus.  Isn't Mother Nature ingenious!
