Incredible ductile deformation in gabbro at Porthallow on the east coast of the Lizard Peninsula in south Cornwall. These rocks are part of the Lizard ophiolite complex and were deformed at extremely high temperatures and pressures (equivalent to granulite facies metamorphism). The colour difference is compositional, with the lighter (leuocratic) layers with high levels of plagioclase and the darker (melanocratic) layers with high levels of pyroxene / amphibole. It is unclear if the compositional layering was caused by metamorphism or primary magmatic fractional crystallisation. These rocks and the rest of the Lizard ophiolite sequence are part of a fragment of oceanic crust that was obducted during the Variscan orogeny. It is easy to think that the high-grade metamorphism was caused by this event. However, the adjacent metasedimentary sequences have barely experienced greenschist facies low-grade metamorphism. So it is possible these rocks experienced high temperatures and pressures before the Variscan. But oceanic crust doesn’t experience those conditions, so it is a proper dilemma! There is no conclusive model for these rocks yet (love to hear people’s thoughts). But final food for thought, we always think rocks undergo metamorphism by squishing and heating up cold rocks. Plagioclase with iridescence (“labradorescence”) in gabbro/anorthosite. Plagioclase is the most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust, making up about half of the oceanic crust and more than a third of continental crust. But labradorescent plagioclase like this is not common. That’s because two things are required for labradorescence: (1) the right composition of plagioclase, and (2) very slow cooling of the magmatic rock. Only certain compositions undergo “exsolution”—the separation of one solid into two solids, like oil separating from water. The sub-microscopic layers that form during separation result in light interference that causes the colors. The slow cooling provides sufficient time for the separation to happen. In these examples, we see that the plagioclases are “zoned”—their compositions vary from core to rim. Only some parts of the plagioclases—the ones with the right composition—exhibit labradorescence. Green Russians.⁣ ⁣ Uvarovite is a chromium bearing garnet belonging to the ugrandite group (calcium garnets) and is the only consistently green garnet due to the presence of chromium. ⁣ ⁣ Only rarely found in metamorphic rocks, metamorphic uvarovite forms from chromium-spinels by hot fluid interactions (metasomatism), although the exact nature of this process is unclear. More commonly uvarovite is of magmatic (igneous) origins because of the much higher chromium content of the mantle over the crust where metamorphic uvarovites may form.⁣ ⁣ Shown here is a 443-419 million year old, finely crystalline, fracture filling sheet of uvarovites hosted on a chromitite (an igneous rock composed mostly of the mineral chromite). This stunning specimen is from the intrusive complex of the Saranvskiy Massif in Russia.
