Pegs, strips of old t-shirts, old stockings, shoe laces, they all work to tether plants. So the next time you go to throw something away or add something to your shopping list, stop and think about it. Physalis Peruvians has many names.... The Cape Gooseberry, Goldenberry, Husk Cherry, Peruvian Ground Cherry, Poha and Poha Berry to name a few. In Australia we call it a Cape Gooseberry. It's considered an annual in temperate regions and a perennial in the tropics. However here in our temperate zone it's most definitely a perennial because our winters aren't cold enough to kill the dormant root system. Cape Gooseberries are a member of the Solanaceae family making it a distant relative of the potato, tomato and eggplant but their flavour is sweet with a strong tang. You'll need trellising to keep the fruit up off the ground because these bushy beauties can grow up to two meters tall in ideal conditions. For best results plant Cape Gooseberry in fertile soil with good drainage, next to a wall that gets plenty of sun. (They don't like strong winds so a fence is a good way to protect them.) Feed them weekly, water them daily and give them potash once a month to increase flowering. You can harvest the fruit when the husk is papery and dry. Gently split the husk open a bit and if you see the very orange fruit inside, it's ripe. If it still has tinges of green, leave it be. You can also wait for them to fall off the plant completely but it's not easy to crawl under the bush to collect them so if you've got small ones about, offer them the task of daily foraging for gold. Once harvested, you can store Cape Gooseberries in their husk for up to 40 days while you look up the amazing array of recipes for jams, preserves and dessert ideas for your bounty. Alternatively you can test your powers of control and freeze them out of their husks until you're ready to use them. It took all my might to gather this 2 kilos of tangy deliciousness but knowing what the jam is like, I'd say it was worth it! Peas develop from the base of the pod, up. That means I picked this pod a couple of days too early. To help you work out when to harvest your peas, take note of the sowing date. Most seed packets will tell you how many days it will take for the produce to mature. If you have the date at hand, you'll always know what day to begin your harvest. - 60-70 days in the case of shelling peas Happy digging! ✌ . . #peas #gardening #urbanfarming #veggiegarden #veggiepatch #gardeningforbeginners #gardeningbasics #instatip #instatips #sarahsgardeningtips #gardeningtips #gardeningtip #urbanfarming #urbanhomestead #homegrown #digyourfood

When pruning the laterals from my favourite tomatoes, I like to put some in a glass of rain water on the kitchen windowsill. After a couple of weeks they have enough roots to be planted out. I've found that tap water does nowhere near the job that rain water from our tanks does and I'm guessing that's due to the high levels of..well, crap. There's simply no other way to put it. So if you need to prune a lateral or two don't throw them away, pop them in a glass of rain water and watch the magic happen! "Rouge de Marmande' is a French heirloom variety, that is rich in flavour but low on seeds. Considered a 'determinate' tomato, this plant will only grow to a maximum height of around 1.5 meters as opposed to the 'indeterminate' varieties like Tommy Toe, which can grow up to 6 metres tall! That means you won't need a whole lot of trellising or space to grow this delicious variety. In fact all 'determinate' tomatoes like Rouge de Marmande are happy growing in good sized pots which makes them ideal for balconies and gardens with limited space. This little garden headache is known as a curl grub. It's the larvae of a few beetles like The Scarab, The African Black Beetle and The Christmas Beetle. And while it looks the same, it's not a witchety grub. If you have brown/dead/bare patches in your lawn, chances are these guys are in your soil munching on the roots. Seeing moths flying around your lawn is another telltale sign. But lawn can struggle and die off in places so the best way discover if you truly do have curl grub is to pour some warm soapy water over the patchy area and cover it with a piece of carpet or heavy doormat overnight. If you have curl grubs, they will come to the surface by morning. Pick them up and feed them to the chooks as a great source of protein or to eradicate them from large areas, drench your soil with Neem oil. If you're new to the wonders of Neem oil you can follow #neemoilforthegarden to see my other posts and learn more about ways to use Neem oil in your garden. Quick Tip ✔ In the past we've talked about the way that you can float seeds to see which ones are good for saving. (If they float they're no good.) But another simple way is to use observation. Flat seeds have no embryo inside which means they can't germinate. If a seed is flat and you can compare it to another in the same batch which looks plump, then it's not worth saving. ... But it is worth throwing in the compost just incase.
