Just black and white for today ⁣ how are you all? ☺️ here I am in Melbourne! For so long I planned to go back to Australia and its just about now, after 4 months, that I feel reealllly at home here. I haven't seen that much of Australia since I arrived. I should really go check out some places soon. Queensland! Western Australia! Spent half the day thinking it was Friday. Let me tell you, it’s not.

After #pride I mentioned that I was proud of my rugby club @kxsrfc for marching under the “more pride, more colour” inclusive flag and received a critical message from a follower saying they “hoped” that we didn’t use the inclusive flag, calling said flag “madness” saying that “we don’t need our skin colours placed upon it” (it won’t shock you that the message was from a white gay man I’m sure). I’m not objecting to someone being critical of my actions, I *need* people to be critical of me, I am objecting to someone who is white criticising the people of colour in our community who have said that this flag makes them feel more welcome, seen and represented. If you are more offended, by a flag having some more colours added to it, than you are by the cultural & sexual racism that is prevalent within our LGBTQ community than not only is your white privilege showing, but so is your prejudice. Of course, as a white person, you don’t feel the need for race to be represented on the flag - because it is not our race, white, that is structurally & socially stigmatised and mistreated. However bad the statistics around LGBTQ mental health, unemployment, addiction, homelessness etc for white LGBTQ people, the statistics are worse for our queer brethren who are people of colour. If adding some more stripes to a flag (a flag that has changed several times since its inception in the 1970s) bothers you more than the treatment of queer people of colour, then you are part of the problem, not them.

Happy #Pride London! Whether it was because people are energised by the 50th anniversary of #stonewall, whether people feel re-galvanised to take to the streets in this politically troubled times, or whether it was some other reason - it was amazing that 1.5 million people took to the streets of our capital city. When across the world right wing, homophobic politicians are coming to power, unrelenting transphobia in our press, Twitter continuing its status as a hot bed of bigoted hate and anger, while violent homophobic & transphobic hate crimes are increasing at alarming numbers, it’s still important to come together and stand in unison. Pride *IS* flawed, the way it gets co-opted by big businesses as a marketing opportunity is increasingly problematic but it still has a really special place in my heart - so however you celebrated, happy pride
