It’s show time, so let me share with you a very pretty color zoned Tourmaline in Quartz that we will be exhibiting at the very prestigious and traditional 32nd TIMA(Tokyo Intl. Seen in Vegas! Great to see crystals on matrix of the rare mineral euclase, which was once often mistaken for aquamarine. Euclase has very similar chemistry to aquamarine being BeAlSiO₄(OH), but it is monoclinic and although once thought to derive its colour from various states of iron, the cause of colour was also shown by Basil Anderson of Gem-A to be due to Chromium with perhaps ‘input’ from vanadium. Euclase also breaks easily and it derives its name after the Greek eu and klasis which together mean “good fracture”. With a hardness of 7.5 it also makes a great gemstone, and sometime blue stones for analysis turn out to be this rare species. Famous localities include Brazil and Zimbabwe, but some of the best euclases ever discovered come from Colombia. Historically, these were sporadic in occurrence and were not given much importance as there was a lack of knowledge of the material and of course the energy was being put towards emerald production and so they were ‘overlooked’. But being so rare, good crystals became collectors’ items, and now almost ‘grail’ species, and crystalline specimens with good colour are much sought after. This group of crystals on matrix from Colombia is just beautiful and so typical. Stout prisms some with ‘chisel’ profile and faces straited along the length, with crazy terminations of pyramid and ‘clinopyramid’ faces, often complex and forming ‘stepped’ zones around the tops like seen here. Interestingly under the microscope are often seen three-phase inclusions exactly like its emerald ‘cousin’ from Colombia. However, the colour is very distinctive, here a soft but bright teal blue and very slight pleochroism. This piece, on matrix, brilliant lustre and a classic rarity! Here is a Tourmaline slice from @Haveytourmalinequarry with unusual asymmetrical color zoning and interesting growth.. the Blue zone is highly chatoyant (cat’s eye effect) while the rest of the gem is your normal highly included polychrome Tourmaline. The white crust on the outer edge is a layer of Quartz crystals that covered every bit of this pocket’s core. Something very special was shared with us two weeks ago at the New England Mineral Conference: The new find of large Tourmaline from Mount Mica, owned and Operated by Gary Freeman and his team. These crystals are so rare for their size, transparency, and fine condition. Thank you to Gary for sharing such a special and new (January 2019) find from your illustrious and historic mine.
