Gorky was born in #Armenia, but was forced to flee #Turkish persecution, and in 1920 settled in the USA. His early work was strongly influenced by Pablo #Picasso and the European Surrealists. In the summer of 1942, Gorky spent three weeks in Connecticut making drawings from nature. He went on to produce a series of paintings that refer to natural forms. ‘Arshile Gorky: 1904 – 1948’, the first Italian retrospective of the seminal 20th century artist, will be staged during next year’s Venice Biennale. In May 2019, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia will present a comprehensive survey exhibition of the work of Arshile Gorky at Ca’ Pesaro- International Gallery of Modern Art. – The exhibition will examine the stages of Gorky’s remarkable career from his earliest works during the 1920s, where his interrogation of Cézanne’s compositions permeated his approach to painting, through to the culmination of his autodidactic study of modern masters and movements, to the point where the elements from these various stimuli explicitly coalesced into Gorky’s singular and powerful vision. Curated by Gabriella Belli and Edith Devaney, ‘Arshile Gorky: 1904 – 1948’ will include masterpieces on loan from significant international institutions including Tate (@tate), Whitney Museum of American Art (@whitneymuseum), Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza (@museothyssen), National Gallery of Art (@ngadc), and Centre Pompidou (@centrepompidou). – In addition to creating a hugely important and distinctive body of work, Gorky’s unique vision positioned him as one of the main protagonists in the unfolding of the Abstract Expressionist movement.
