Graduating from college was one of the biggest highlights in my life. I was invincible, with wings and superpowers and a degree. But after graduation was over and real life started to hit, things didn’t quite work out the way I thought they would. I quit my first full time job and moved back home feeling lost, feeling like a failure—and that’s the kind of stuff that either no one mentions when you graduate or, even though people tell you about it, you never think will happen to you. I got to the point, sometime between driving for Lyft for 11 months and having a relationship not work out, that I wasn’t sure if I would ever be proud of myself again. Granted, I did a lot of things that I felt were accomplishments, but they weren’t necessarily the kind of things a group of people would celebrate. I moved into my own apartment, got a full time job, stayed in shape, and met the man of my dreams—silent victories. In the back of my mind though, I still had the fear that I would never live up to my potential, never feel invincible again. This past graduation was so big for me, not because of the degree itself, but because of the journey I took to get it. I worked full time and went to school full time, I paid my taxes, and made my own meals—on top of doing my homework and research. I don’t feel invincible anymore, and hopefully I never will again. I feel capable. Response-able. Like life will throw punches, but me too. And that is my hope for everyone graduating this year—to accept that your path won’t always go the way you think it should, that the victories you do win may not the be the ones you’ve imagined, and of course, to continue clapping for yourself even if you’re the only one doing it. #blackexcellence #blackqueen #graduateschool #blackgirlmagic #blackgirlsrock #blackgirls #melanin #blackgirlsgraduate #college_diaries #collegelife #college

Talk about #PHDLIFE changing... . This Dissertation Institute definitely had on impact on ya girl. I literally HATE writing and now I’ve left feeling a lot better about it. . Meeting so many minority PhD students and candidates that have/had the same struggles as me throughout graduate school has opened my eyes even more to the struggle of not only getting a PhD (which is hard enough) but being a minority getting one. . This was one of the few times a safe place was created to allow and embrace feelings of confusion, inadequacy, and isolation without judgement. These spaces are not always available to us in these academic settings, but to have this opportunity of PhD bonding was downright therapeutic! . It was also amazing to meet and see powerful, influential minority women and men PhDs. Representation is everything and when you see people that like like you where you want to be, it just makes you want to hustle even harder and make it across that finish line (submit that dissertation). . Now that it has come to a close, the challenge is to now implement the writing skills into real life (I mean that’s why I went). I went from 0 to 9 pages in just that week for a journal article I’m writing (major progress for me). I may not live in the beachy and relaxing climate of San Diego but I need to make sure I block out writing time, manage my days better, schedule in the gym but don’t use it to avoid writing, and employ the techniques I’ve learned to figure out what works for me.
