People . . . . In a country where people speak several hundred languages, it is still regarded as unfortunate if you don't speak English (esp at schools, colleges, workplaces). And if you do, beware, the Indian Grammar Nazis are out to get you The same breed of people have a special affinity for non-English speakers from other countries though. . . . . I grew up in a household which spoke multiple languages (including English), as a lot of Indian families do. Having lived abroad and having worked with clients from various countries, I cringe now to think that I was once sitting on a back bench in a convent school, making fun of teachers/classmates who mispronounced words. It was all silly fun and jest (maybe not so much for the other person), but when I went to college/started working in India I sincerely wished I could revisit my teenage years and wipe away my idiocy. I met brilliant colleagues at work, incredibly talented folks, whose career growth was slow for the sole reason that they couldn't speak good English (not even a requirement for their role). And people who had control over their progress fell over themselves to please anyone visiting from overseas -- if they didn't speak English, it made them infinitely more exotic somehow. . . * An open letter to the ones who write like this * hey there, i hope you are doing good. and i so hope that you try to understand me. Fair? Now that I have captured your attention by writing like you, I think we are good to start. I know this generation believes in the quote, 'Rules are meant to be broken.' But what you are trying to break here by trying to either fit in or stand out, isn't really wise. First, every sentence begins with a capital letter. This is the basic rule of Grammar. And when da style of ur Whatsapp msgs is imitated in da style of your writing - that's where you are killing Grammar. Yes, I know. Now you'll call me a Grammar Nazi because isn't that what is in vogue today? Labels are so much in vogue that anyone who tries to save Grammar is a Grammar Nazi, anyone who stands up for women is a feminist and anyone who prefers to be quiet cannot be a feminist, but there has to be some label so we label those people as chauvinists. Labels - simple; like people are just plastic boxes of condiments in your kitchen whom you need to label to be able to use them properly. So be it then. I am a Grammar Nazi then. Nevertheless, when you type like this you break the flow of whatever you are trying to say. It is a human tendency to pause at a line break, so your thoughts which you write in that way come across as juvenile - making no sense because they aren't united, they are divided and hence, they fall; they fail to stand on their own. After you write and you sit back to marvel the masterpiece that you think you have written, do you think you stand out? Do you think you are creating a major impact with your broken sentences which, when one reads, more or less seem like a three-year-old trying to pronounce the words by reading one at a time? The pen is mightier than the sword. Please don't use it to make yourself mightier - use it for adding to the might of everyone who writes. Do not make writing a joke; use it to create an impact.
