More exciting news!! Zero Wave is moving into our old space at 720 N. Killingsworth St. (they re-open on Friday!), and we’ve provisionally donated the PA to them! They kept the stage (though, it’s gonna look *quite* different next time you see it), and will be hosting FREE, ALL AGES shows! It meant *so* much when you all so generously donated money to help us procure the PA, and you donated that money based on a promise of bolstering FREE, ALL AGES shows in NORTH PORTLAND, so I couldn’t be happier that not only will the tradition continue, but it’ll be in the very same space! Shows will start in late August, so make sure to follow @zer0wave, and hit ‘em up about playing a show! And with that, I’m signing off of the Green Noise FB and IG. Both Green Noise and the PA are in good hands, so my work here is done. Jay Reatard released his fourth single for Matador Records in 2008, two years before his untimely passing at the age of 30 in Memphis TN. Side A is “See Saw,” though Side B “Screaming Hand” is by far my favorite of the two. The Matador Years produced some decent songs from Jay, but the urgency and raw power of his earlier recordings (and I don’t even mean with Reatards, Lost Sounds, Destruction Unit, etc.) seemed to have gone by the wayside in an attempt to reconcile his signature hooky garage punk rock with a more power-pop approach. Absolutely nothing wrong with that combination necessarily, and both of these tracks serve it well. Reatards released their last 7” in 2006 on Canadian record label Zaxxon Records. I’m a bit confused by the chronology of this recording, as the first song “I Lie Too” was previously released on their first LP Teenage Hate, but the other two tracks only appear here. Regardless, this was recorded on four-track at Jay’s Shattered Headquarters, and does appear to be some of the earliest Reatards material, indicating everything was played and recorded by Jay. This was pressed with 3 different color variants, (black/blue/clear) for a total pressing of 800 copies. Oakland’s The Phantom Limbs released their second and final release (before a brief reunion EP in 2010) in 2003 on Alternative Tentacles. Displacement picks up where their debut left off; more catchy synth-punk death rock; a very tight rhythm section, heavy keyboards up in the mix, theatrical vocals. I unfortunately was turned on to this band late, after they had broken up, and never got to see them live, though as I mentioned in my last post they have done various reunion shows over the years since their initial 2005 break-up. I found this copy @greennoiserecords in Portland OR maybe 8 or 9 years ago. Sooo last week I asked @jaaakeeee for Portland record shop recommendations and one he gave was @greennoiserecords. In doing my Portland record research, learned that Dirtnap records is run outta there and that's the label for Mind Spiders! Very cool. Was bummed they cancelled their Empty Bottle show last fall with Drakulas, had a ticket and everything.
