The day after more than 40 were killed in mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand in the worst terror attack in the nation’s history, the country’s prime minister vowed to strengthen the country’s gun laws. “I can tell you one thing right now: our gun laws will change,” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said during a press conference Saturday morning local time. “Now is the time for change.” Forty-nine people were killed and more than 40 others injured after shootings at two mosques in Christchurch during Friday’s afternoon prayer. An Australian citizen in his late 20s has been charged with murder and two others have been taken into custody. Ardern said the suspected primary shooter used five guns, including semi-automatic weapons and shotguns, adding that he obtained a gun license in November 2017 and acquired the guns legally thereafter. “That will give you an indication of why we need to change our gun laws,” she said. Authorities would be investigating how and when he acquired the firearms as well as the suspect’s travel in and out of New Zealand, Ardern said. At midnight tonight, New Zealand’s new gun bill will become law. Last night Prime Minister @JacindaArdern spoke at the Third Reading of the Arms Amendment Act with passion and pride that Parliament has been able to pass the bill swiftly. The final vote came in at 119 for the amendment and one against. The changes to our gun laws come less than a month after the Christchurch terrorist attack on March 15 where 50 people were killed. “I can recall very vividly the moment I knew that we would need to be here, doing what we are doing, right now. I was very early on in a briefing with the Commissioner of Police, where he described to me the nature of the attack that had occurred in Christchurch. I could not fathom how weapons that could cause such destruction and large-scale death, could have been obtained legally in this country. I made a decision after that briefing, that I would go down that day, and without having the chance to question the Parliament, know that Parliament would be with me, and they were, and again I thank you for that. Mr Speaker we are ultimately here because fifty people died, and they do not have a voice. We in this house are their voice. Today marks the 20th anniversary of the #ColumbineMassacre. Since then, 143 children have been killed by gun violence in US schools. Gun reform is integral to pursuing reproductive justice: that everyone has a right to safe & healthy families and communities.
