EATING DISORDERS ARE MORE THAN THEY SEEM ✨ For those of you out there who’ve never had an eating disorder, you might think that what we in the healthcare field often call “behaviors” are the majority of what an eating disorder is made up of. In fact, the DSM pretty much only covers specific behaviors in their conceptualization of eating disorders. ✨ But honestly, it’s a LOT more complicated than that. The behaviors are just what you see; the ways in which we act out our pain or our struggle. What’s really go on is so much more. It’s so much deeper. ✨ This is why I’m actually not a huge CBT for eating disorder treatment fan. In my very humble opinion and experience, CBT might help stop the behaviors... but usually, that just means they show up somewhere else, because the root of the problem is still there, looking for something to latch onto. ✨ If you’re seeking recovery, I urge you to dig deep. Help yourself gain the tools you need to redirect your behaviors towards something more sustainable, yes, but don’t forget the bottom of your iceberg. Don’t forget that under all of the behaviors is deep, deep pain. If you want recovery, TRUE recovery, you need to chip away at your iceberg; ALL of it. . . . #edrecoveryarmy #edrecoverywarrior #haes #healthateverysize #cptsdwarrior #cptsdrecovery #bingeeatingrecovery #bingeeatingdisorderrecovery #atypicalanorexia #atypicalanorexiarecovery #mswstudent #socialworkstudent #gradstudentlife #socialworkerlife #therapyiscool #cognitivebehavioraltherapy #mentalhealthblog

Why are we so connected to this? The weight we were in high school. We were hardly out of adolescence, barely done growing, our bodies still working hard at bone formation and brain development. We were children, or just barely “adults” (if you can call it that at the age of 18). Why does this weight become the weight at which one should remain to be deemed “a hard worker” or “dedicated” or”has it together” or has “taken care of one’s self”? . The answer (as are most on my answers when I ask a rhetorical question ‍♀️) is diet culture. It’s the message that says, “Stay as ‘thin’ as you were in adolescence and if you can’t, keep trying.” . It’s the influence it has on our children as they go off to college, fearing the “freshman 15” (which, by the way is another giant pile of steaming diet culture bullsh**, but a discussion for another day) and focusing more energy on avoiding weight gain at all costs than actually enjoying the college experience. . It’s the under-representation of size diversity ‼️EVERYWHERE‼️ we look, modeling that one body size is correct, but others are wrong. . It’s fatphobia. . It’s weight bias and weight stigma. . It’s the oppression and healthism those who live in larger bodies experience daily. . It’s the message we get from our well-meaning-but-(sometimes)-under-informed medical community that tells us weight gain itself is bad for your health and we must avoid it at all costs. . It’s the elevation and privilege our society gives to people in smaller bodies. . Let me be frank: our bodies change. They are supposed to change. And grow. And experience. It is NOT “the norm” for women to live in the exact same body size / shape / weight at age 18 and age 30. Yet almost every woman I know feels shame around her body, feels like she’s failing if she can’t get her body “back.” . Y’all. It’s time for something new.

It may sound silly, but when you’re trapped in an awful mental headspace around food, things like this are huge. • I knew I was healing my relationship with food when the guilt and shame melted away and I no longer scrutinized myself for handfuls of food here and there. The more I removed guilt and arbitrary rules from my diet, the more free I felt and the less controlled by food I became. I used to count out every handful of goldfish or chips or anything I’d put my hand in, and all it did was drive me crazy. I couldn’t stop thinking about the numbers and how I wish I didn’t just do that. I’d shame myself afterward, “I have no willpower!” or “Why can’t I just NOT!” ‍♀️ but as I slowly let go of the crazy food rules I had in my head, I started to heal and make peace with food. Eating the thing I want and moving on has meant everything in healing my relationship with food. Restricting and obsessing never helped - it only kept me bingeing and kept me further disconnected with my body. . . #dietculture #dietculturedropout #healthateverysize #intuitiveeating #HAES #foodfreedom #bodykindness #lifebeyonddieting #bodypositivity #morethanabody #allbodiesaregoodbodies #weightneutral #bodyacceptance

We all have biases based on our privilege, experiences, and interactions. It’s natural. It’s human. - However, when we don’t recognize our own biases, we are likely to impart them into the world and in the way we treat others. - This not only applies to race, religion, gender, age, ability, socioeconomic status (aka, the things we typically think about), but also size & weight. - For example, when we hear the words “lazy, unmotivated, unhealthy” what body shape comes to mind? How about when we hear “active, motivated, healthy?” - My guess is that these words will paint a picture of two very different bodies. - This doesn’t inherently make us bad people, BUT it does mean that we have some biases to unpack & room to grow - So I’m welcoming all of you to join me in embracing the imperfect & doing the hard work to break down these biases. Listen. Learn. Reflect. Empathize. #foodandfearless

Are you a “should” thinker when it comes to hunger and fullness✋? . Your mind tries SO HARD to control your body, but sometimes you just can’t reason hunger or fullness. Your body has it’s own agenda and it is up to you to trust that the signals it is giving your mind will lead to the best care for yourself. . . The most effective way to promote overeating, binging, and walking away form a meal stuffed and sick is to deprive your body of nourishment because your mind thinks it knows what your body “should” need. . Stop the “should” in their tracks and make the commitment to caring for your body. Learn how to trust the signals it is giving you and most of all, give yourself the permission to honor those signals. . . ✨If this sounds scary to you and you are not sure what the next right step is, head to the link in my bio or send me a DM. I am currently accepting ✨TWO ✨more clients for the month of July for my 3-month coaching program. We will work through the “should” blocks that are keeping you from trusting and nourishing your body.

The next time you catch yourself judging someone’s weight gain or loss, or you find yourself scrolling deep on someone’s IG comparing yourself to all her pics, or you are looking back at old photos of yourself wishing you still looked like that, or in shock you walked around looking like that, practice stopping yourself in your tracks with a dose of self-compassion. Because @annehathaway is right: Bodies change. Bodies grow. Bodies shrink. It’s all love. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Practicing self-compassion helps us see that we share a common humanity - no matter how ideal or less-than-ideal we believe our bodies to be OR we believe another’s body to be. As humans, we have bodies, we see bodies, we compare bodies, we experience pain, illness, birth, death, loss, joy, adventure, love. ‍♀️Some of us are thinner than we used to be because we've been dealing with sickness or pain that causes us to lose our appetites. Or because we have changed up our diets or the amount of physical activity we get. Or we are battling eating disorders or are depressed or too busy to pay attention to our eating habits or are losing fat at the gym or had a baby or can finally afford to eat well or can’t afford to eat well or have medical complications or any number of other reasons. ‍♀️Some of us are heavier than we used to be because we are finally recovering from years of disordered eating. Or we are simply growing older. Or because we find comfort and joy in food right now. Or we are on medication that causes weight gain or have been too busy to watch our eating habits or are depressed or we are building muscle or are pregnant or can finally afford to eat well or can’t afford to eat well or have medical complications or any number of things. Be compassionate toward your own body and the bodies of all those you see. Instead of comparing your body to someone else's or negatively judging yourself, practice compassion to know that we are all complex humans that change and shrink and grow. We are all in this together. If you want more help, enroll in our Beauty Redefined body image resilience course linked in bio. #beautyredefined #morethanabody #seemorebemore
