Today’s Inspiration: Hanae Mori
Hanae Mori was the first Japanese (or Asian) fashion designer to be officially listed/admitted as a haute couture house by the Fédération Française de la Couture. Mori is also one of only two Japanese (official) haute couture designers to show their houses collections in both NYC and Paris.
Mori was born in 1926. After college she attended dress-making school and opened her House in 1951. By the 1990’s the brand was internationally known (and respected) and was taking in something crazy like $500 million a year in sales. Supposedly Mori visited Coco Chanel in 1960 and the conversation between the designers was enough to change the way Mori operated as a designer.
In 1965 she successfully presented a collection in NYC (called ‘East Meets West’). A little over a decade later and she opened a showroom in Paris (this is significant because maintaining a Paris showroom is one of the requirements to be a member of La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.) Mori was obviously admitted.
Throughout her career Mori designed costumes for feature films, created designer uniforms for high-end airlines She was awarded the French Legion of Honor (given to her by the president of France) in 1989.
