(Picture above: Kurt Schwitters, En Morn – ‘These are the things we are fighting for’, 1947.) . Art is fun. Of course it is. If it wasn’t for that crazy thing called ‘art’, would you know anybody whispering under a full moon ‘i love thine’ instead of ‘i love you’? I mean, without behaving like a complete idiot? Well, i don’t. Moonlight sometimes can be quite merciless, believe me. . But Kurt Schwitters did the trick. Moreover, doing so he composed one of the most wonderful odes ever dedicated to a lady. It’s called ‘An Anna Blume’ – actually Schwitters made an own translation of it, calling the poem ‘To Eve Blossom’. Two fragments: . Blue is the colour of your yellow hair Red is the whirl of your green wheels, Thou simple maiden in everyday dress, Thou small green animal, I love thine! . And you, you most glorious of all, You are from the back as from the front, E-V-E. Easy victory, Tallow trickles to stroke over my back. Eve Blossom, Thou drippy animal, I Love Thine! . After WW1 “everything had broken down and new things had to be made out of the fragments” and so he used wire, bus tickets and scraps and pieces he found, and in a Berlin café he introduced himself to a colleague artist, saying: “I’m a painter, and I nail my images together.” . Later Schwitters had to run for the Nazi’s and eventually found refuge on the Isle of Man. ‘Fun fact’: as there was a shortage of art supplies the artists would mix brick dust with sardine oil for paint and Schwitters even made sculptures out of porridge: “The room stank. A musty, sour, indescribable stink which came from 3 Dada sculptures. The porridge had developed mildew and the statues were covered with greenish hair.” . Buon appetito. Mind though: the hair couldn’t be Anna/Eve’s, because hers was yellow. Or blue. Whatever. . Hey- i kinda like these digressions into art history, don’t you? If so, let’s do this more often. No dull facts, but some pretty exciting details. It’ll be fun. We’ll do this on our blog too – we’ll be able to go a bit wider. .
