#Day1 Introductions & #Day2 Meet my harp of #harpril My name is Bethany Murphy. I’m both a #pianist and #harpist, #performer and #teacher. #Day3 Concert Day Ritual Check music book and make sure everything is in order, tune the #harp, warm up with more familiar songs, practice newer pieces or more difficult parts, and pack up my suitcase (more on #Day18). Then I get ready for the gig - black outfit, hair up, pearls and makeup. I grab water and snacks to take with me and get everything in the van. The #harp and my purse are always last! When I sit in the van I go over my list: #Harp, book, stand, stool, tuner, business cards. ✅ I always arrive 30-45 minutes early to get set up. Once everything is set up I allow my #harp to adjust to the settings before tuning. I’ll quickly go over a song or two making sure everything is in order, I can see the wedding coordinator from where I’m sitting, and then I take a walk before I come back to begin playing. I typically don’t do much after a gig because I’m tired! But it’s a good tired. I love my job! ❤️ So many harpists have joined the #harpril challenge and it’s been so fun to read their stories. #Day6 - Practice Room - #harpril #Before and #after set up in my studio. Swipe to see what it looks like now! My practice room is where I play and teach both #harp and #piano. This room works great for the set-up I need. I'm able to work at the table in front of the window (hello, neighbors!), watch people stop and write down my number (I have a #music #lessons sign out front) and see when my students pull up. #Day8 Guilty Harp Pleasure Confession time! New #Music: I have downloaded (and printed! ) nearly every piece of #free #harp music available and purchased more than I'll ever be able to play in this lifetime! I want ALL the harp music but I choose to exercise self-control. Maybe it's just that I can't quite justify all the $ I could spend. ‍♀️ I watch for sales and coupon codes and take advantage of those! However, if you have extra sheet music you want to get off your hands (or shelf) feel free to message me for my address. I'll gladly help you out! #Jewelry and Accessories: I warned my husband on our first date that I come with lots of shoes , jewelry and accessories . I have some really special ones and I love them all, but there's a special place in my heart for the #musical ones. I have received most of them as gifts from family and students. #Day10 How I Started When I was a young teenager I decided I wanted to play the #harp. I don't remember anything specific bringing on the inspiration or desire to play the harp. However, knowing it was an expensive instrument that I couldn’t afford I decided to keep the idea to myself and pray about it. While visiting friends one day, talking about #music and #instruments, my dad commented that he wanted my sister, Charity, to play the harp. That night I asked Charity why Dad had said that and did she want to play the harp. She had no idea where that came from and definitely did not want to play the harp. I asked if she was okay with me talking with Dad about playing the harp and she was like "please do!" So I did. In the end Dad said he didn't really care who played the harp, he just really wanted one of his children to pick up that instrument as some point. When I started taking #harp #lessons in October of 2001 I would go twice a week to my #teacher's house. Mondays were #lesson days and I'd arrive a little early to warm up, have a lesson, then #practice til Mom came to pick me up. On Wednesdays I would practice while Mom ran my siblings to #piano lessons or did her grocery shopping. I got about 4 hours of playing in each week. I started to share how I began playing the harp professionally but decided to save it for another day. #Day13 Dream Gig #harpril Right now, I have two dream gigs. One would be an ongoing gig at a nursing home/assisted living or hotel - once a week for several months, or once a month for a year. I have returned to certain places, like the @cottagetreasurestearoom for their #Christmas events a couple of years in a row. Being able to return and play at the same location allows me to get to know some of the staff members and even some residents/customers. It's rewarding to hear "I remember you from last year and am looking forward to hearing you play again this evening." The other dream gig I have would be to travel and do a concert tour. "Bethany Murphy, #Harp #tour - buy tickets now!" But it's a #dream, so there are no links for purchasing tickets at this time. I have, however, traveled with a small harp several times and played in #weddings and for special events in #Brazil. Though not a concert tour, I'll take it! I used to dream of being able to take harp gigs and then hire other harpists to take part of the gig. Of course it's all discussed with the client and agreed upon ahead of time. This actually did happen for a #Christmas #openhouse a couple of years ago and I was able to split a gig with a #harpist friend, Rachel. I'd love to hear about one of your biggest dreams. #Day14 Harping Hands #harpril Let's imagine something for just a moment. Close your eyes and picture a beautiful harp sitting on stage, lights are dim in the auditorium and everyone claps as a young lady wearing a long black dress enters the stage from the right. She takes a bow and sits down behind a beautiful dark wood harp with gold designs down the sound board. The performer gently places her hands on either side of the harp and slowly leans it back onto her right shoulder. She takes a deep breath and begins to play the most beautiful song you have ever heard! Before she arrived at this performance she spent many hours practicing. She had to plan her time carefully because she played too long one day and got a blister on her left ring finger. She practiced some with a band aid but it's just not the same as using your finger. Once that blister healed she was able to play a bit more, until another blister formed on her right index finger and before she realized it, it popped and there were spots of blood on the strings and the down the sound board. After cleaning that up she took another break. She'd study the music without playing so she wouldn't lose what she had learned so far but gave her fingers time to heal. As soon as they were good to go again she continued practicing, plucking the strings softly, slowly working her way up to playing the correct dynamics, especially where there were several fortissimo measures in a row! She practiced for several hours, with 10-15 minute breaks every hour, not only so she'd have the song down and performance ready, but so that her fingers would callus. She persevered through the callus making process and performed an amazing recital for family and friends.
