In 1772, the construction of Frederick the Great’s last building, the Belvedere on Klausberg, was finished. It is a two-story pavilion influenced by Italian and English Palladianism, offering a unique panorama over Sanssouci Park and the surrounding Havel River landscape. ____ 1772 war der Bau des letzten Gebäudes Friedrich des Großen, des Belvederes auf dem Klausberg, fertiggestellt. Swipe: The BELVEDERE on Pfinstberg in Potsdam. Commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. The original plans were much grander. The intention was a sort of Palace with enormous long stairs stretched out the entire hill down. However, in 1849 there were all sort of revolutions through Europe including uprisings in what we call nowadays Germany and the king needed to realize that there was also something like a parliament with too much opposition against some other mega project for his own personal use. In Soviet occupied area this was a no go area because of the wide views people could actually look out to what was western part of Berlin. It ended up being vandalized by Soviet soldiers during the years. A restoration project took on from 1990. In 2005 it was finished and am so impressed! It feels like a magic place and the views are spectacular every way. swipe: Neues Palais. ‘New Palace’ in Sans Souci park, Potsdam. Frederick the great of Prussia Commissioned this palace still with rococo style and decorations however it is clear that the exterior is in fact already from a later style: Baroque. Note that the red brick on the exterior is fake, it is plaster painted as brick. The interior has a spectacular marble hall on first level, with the enormous marble floor. Frederik did not want to have this floor supported by pillars below in the grotto hall, he thought this was disturbing. However the weight of this marble floor was this substantial that it needed to be reinforced for three times during history. The most recent one only short time ago and most likely this was done once and forever. It is noteworthy to say that in the interior a lot of silver decoration is used instead of gold. The last German emperor William used this palace as his principal residence. It’s interesting to see the first bathroom to appear in a palace during his time. During Soviet occupation damage has been done and I admire the absolutely wonderful restorations that have been done and it’s back to splendor!
