Recognizing Mental Resistance⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We’ve all been there. We have a goal or a dream that we want to make happen, and we seem to create a million excuses as to why we shouldn’t get started ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Or maybe we actually do start making moves, but after the first few days of excitement wears off, we find ourselves skipping a day, putting off the work, and eventually just giving up all together ‍♀️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ But are we really too busy, too tired, too broke, too old, too undereducated— too WHATEVER, to really go after what we want from life? Or is there something else that’s stopping us? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There is, and it’s called Resistance ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ We all experience resistance every day, in those moments where we have a choice to either engage in behavior and habits that support the realization of our dreams and goals, or fall back on old and unhelpful (but familiar) practices✋ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Resistance has many ways it likes to get a hold of us, but its favorite way is to keep us stuck by creating a story in our mind that keeps us blocked from moving forward. And these stories aren’t based in reality or on facts! They’re completely made up in our own minds, and will keep us trapped in patterns that don’t serve us ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Here are some sneaky ways that resistance comes into play in our lives. I was terrified. I felt like I wasn’t good enough to stand in the middle of that prestigious little red circle on the #TEDx stage. Right before the big day was coming, my husband pointed out that most the other speakers either had a PhD or they were the CEO of some huge, successful company. ⁣ ⁣ Then of course I REALLY freaked out and ALL the negative self talk kicked in full force—I didn’t think I was smart enough and I most certainly don’t have fancy initials after my name. I didn’t feel ready enough, what if I froze on stage, forgot what to say or even worse, what if people didn’t like what I said And believe me, the list goes on and on!⁣ ⁣ Then a friend said, “You have a PhD in heart,” and just like that, everything shifted. I got out of my head and right down into my heart. I remembered my “why” and focused on my purpose. Instead of comparing myself to others and worrying about the “what if’s” I stayed on my path and felt grateful for the opportunity and humbled at the chance to share my story. ⁣ ⁣ So if you are ever freaking out like me, remember YOU have a PhD in heart, you are enough, you are stronger than you think and braver than you could ever imagine. You totally got this!⁣ ⁣ I faced my fears and spoke from the heart and it was a real dream come true to apart of the 10th Anniversary at @TedxBerkeley.
