This image was created in collaboration with @natashalipman ❤️ Obviously this sentiment can translate over to a multitude of different conditions, but since it’s ME Awareness Day today I’m going to be focusing on that. ME sufferers are not lazy. We’re not weak and we’re not ‘not trying hard enough’. We’ve been abandoned. That’s why we’re not getting better. The treatments currently available have been scientifically proven to make sufferers worse. They’re still being offered and pushed on people. Money going into biomedical research is pitiful, particularly from government bodies. We rely solely on charities. Doctors often believe ME isn’t a real condition and I’ve been told before to ‘get over myself’ - great bedside manner right there. My GP is thankfully very understanding but even then there’s nothing he can offer me that will treat this thing. Never mind cure it. Parents of children with ME are facing protection proceedings. Children are being forcefully removed from their home and sanctioned. Who knows what they’re being subjected to in there, their parents aren’t allowed to visit. The treatment of ME patients and their families around the world is nothing short of scandalous. The government ignores us, the media tell lies about us, the average Joe doesn’t know we exist. Anything is possible? Yea right. We are trying our absolute best here. We are fighting every minute of every day regardless of whether or not anyone’s there to see it. It isn’t the sufferers that need to try harder. It’s the systems put in place to help us that need to do that. They’re not doing their job. And we need them to. 41/100

Hashtag blessed - ➕FIRST: SO glad to be back after a health hiatus!!!!➕ Before Lyme, I had a successful career; I worked out everyday; I was extremely extroverted; I felt like my life had direction, like I was in the driver’s seat. My disease, stripped me of all of those things that I thought made me, me. I thought they expressed my strength and success. I suspect most of us would classify those as pieces of our identity. When Lyme hit, I thought it robbed me of my entire life; it robbed me of my identity. I’ve never felt so lost in my entire life. When I had a better-then-normal day, I’d have an entire week of pure hell. The stagnation, or regression almost killed me. But, slowly I’ve begun to work on myself, really work on who I am at my core. It’s like designing your dream house: you get to build and shape, pick and choose, mold and mesh from the ground up. I thought Lyme robbed me of my strength to be who I thought I was. And it did, because those things don’t define me. Those are just habits or skills, etc.. And you know what? I’m just as strong, if not stronger, in this picture as I was before my illness attacked. I refuse to say I’m a Lyme sufferer, because I’m stronger than simply a sufferer. Warrior, battler, fighter are what I prefer. Just like me, we all feel isolated, lost, unsure at times. But, there’s a strength in all of us that’s often underestimated. I still majorly struggle with this concept. I often want to give up, waive my white flag, and just quit. But, whether I’m in a hospital bed or running a marathon, I’m a strong woman who CAN stand on my own two feet and take control of my life. I CAN accomplish my goals, even if imy office is my bed, hooked up to IVs. I’m more of badass now than I was before my disease. We’re all bigger than our trials. Each test is about finding our strength and building upon it every time we face our battles. I’m in the early stages of taking my own advice, but if you’re out there and struggle to find courage, I’m right there with you. But together, we can find our voices. NOTHING can kill our spirit.
