“The reason why I started medicine was because my mom had a major surgery. During complications, a physician came in to help her—a black physician. That was the first time I had ever seen a black physician in person, so that was a major thing for me. I was like, ‘wow, I can do that.’ I wanted to be able to use my mind to be able to serve people the best I could. After that I started taking anatomy classes in high school… and I just fell in love with the body, fell in love with the medicine of it. From there I was like, OK, I definitely want to go into medicine. It also helped that my mom was a nurse, so she had us watching ER all the time when I was a kid. That was the initial introduction. Once I started seeing what medicine really was—helping people, serving people with their health, and then also being more of a counselor to people too—I was like wow, this is something where I can use my mind, use science, and help people just by talking to them, sitting with them, and learning from them.” Marcus Lowe, OMS-I #HumansofOUHCOM #careleadshere #ouhcom #ohiouniversity #medstudent #MinorityHealthMonth #HealthEquity #NMHM1 (photograph by @marlenasloss)

Welcome to my non-traditional journey to medicine, which has taught me many things about people, the process, and most importantly how important it is to be passionate about what you are studying. I am excited to share my journey through medicine and meet amazing people! For the longest time, I have debated whether or not medicine is right for me. I naturally was drawn to public health, specifically health disparities & health equity, since it was natural for myself to ask what/why put these people into these positions. Although I plan on med school after college, I am grateful I took a detour to public health. After many conversations with mentors, I have decided to pursue my childhood dream of becoming a doctor.

#MillionsMissing is a global campaign for myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) health equality. We protest around the world for increased government funding for research, clinical trials, medical education and public awareness. This year MillionsMissing events will take place around the world starting May 5th and ending May 12th! We encourage people with ME and all our allies to participate in #MillionsMissing. Whether you can attend an in-person or virtual event, your participation is needed! You can register, find an event, donate, and more by going to www.millionsmissing.org We are also collecting your stories! We want to curate stories about living with ME around larger themes, such as parenting, disability, aging, career, poverty. Our goal is to tell our story around more general topics to reach a wider audience. We plan to curate stories of ME around these themes to share on social media and with press. Please see our article by going to link in bio, click news, scroll to share your story. This a prime example of fatphobia and thin privilege in action. • As a society we CONSTANTLY judge and police the way people of size eat, but we don’t hold the same kind of concern or high standard of “good eating” for thin people. • Fat people are closely monitored and their food choices are treated as open for comment and commentary by anyone and everyone, no matter what they eat. And for the most part thin people are allowed to eat in peace with minimal chance of being harassed with intrusive comments from strangers. • If you find yourself judging and cringing when a fat person eats “unhealthy” food but not when a thin person does, that is internalized fatphobia, and it is something worth unpacking. • The reason for this double standard is based in two misconceptions: 1.) That if a person is fat it automatically means they are sick/ will inevitably become sick if they stay fat (and inversely they thin people are automatically healthy and their thinness protects them from illness) 2.) That we can control our health by eating the “perfect” diet. • Both of these things are untrue. Thin people get sick with the SAME DISEASES that fat people do. Body size does not determine disease risk. And food is only a one small part of the myriad of factors that influence health - many of which are out of control of the individual such as environment, genetics, and exposure to discrimination and oppression. • But really, all of this is besides the point because a person’s health status or health risk shouldn’t be factors in how much respect they earn either. Being healthy is not a prerequisite for humanity and dignity. • What someone eats is nobody’s business but their own. And a person’s body size does not dictate how worthy they are of eating whatever food they want to without judgement and harassment. • Moral of the story: eat what you want keep your opinions of other people’s plates to yourself. Everyone deserves a peaceful and joyful relationship with food. • • • • • • #thinprivilege #weightstigma #fatphobia #foodpolice #bodypositive #bodypositivity #bodyacceptance #fatacceptance #bodyneutrality #healthateverysize #haes #healthequity #socialdeterminantsofhealth
