I just finished my last phlebotomy for my #hemochromatosis!!! My blood count is looking great, and I feel about 1,000% better without all that extra ferritin in my body! My doctor will be carefully monitoring my levels to make sure they don’t creep up again. I’m so excited to start my SIBO treatment tomorrow and make more progress on this #wellnessjourney ❤️

Recently had a patient with #hemochromatosis and thought back to this illustration I did in med school. • IRON MAN! HEMOCHROMATOSIS! What if superheroes had medical diseases? Which ones would they have? Clearly, iron man would have hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) - an autosomal recessive genetic condition where the body has an extreme excess of iron. Overtime, the iron deposits in different organ systems, notably the liver which can become cirrhotic and lead to hepatocellular carcinoma. Cardiac issues such as CHF secondary to restrictive (or dilated) cardiomyopathy from iron depositing into the heart tissue can occur too. On EKG, low voltage QRS complexes with non specific S-T change is typical for restrictive pattern. Cardiac changes with this disease can be REVERSED if diagnosed early. Kinda like how Tony Stark is able to reverse his own cardiac problems in the comics with his arc reactor (got that one wrong on Uworld…). Arthritis is also seen, and interestingly - pseudo gout. If you see monoarticular arthritis with chondrocalcinosis its diagnostic of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition or pseudo gout, go see if there are any other clues for HH since it could* be secondary to hemochromatosis with the iron deposition promoting CPPD in the joint space. Diabetes can be seen! Its known as "bronze diabetes" presumably bc the hyperpigmentation of the skin giving that lovely sun kissed bronze look. Other issues such as hypogonadism (both centrally or peripherally from iron deposits) are seen which can lead to impotence . Initial evaluation for suspected HH includes iron studies showing high serum ferritin and transferritin saturation. Confirmed by genetic testing for HFE. Do not need a liver biopsy unless still suspicious and have negative HFE test with high serum iron. Treatment is frequent phlebotomy to rid the body of excess iron. This was more fun than studying so I’m gonna make more super hero illness narratives. I often ask myself what is my message? What should I be using this platform for? Is it just to share pretty pictures of interiors? Maybe, but I think not. Today my message is important. It could save your life. It could save the life of someone you love, so please stop and read this. It means something. _____ I have Hemochromatosis. I found out two years ago by chance. That by chance was not a coincidence. It never is. I listened to the whisper that told me there was something wrong even when my doctor said there wasn’t. Friends, trust your gut. Always. _____ What is Hemochromatosis? It’s a condition caused by the over absorption of iron leading to an excessive concentration of iron in your blood. ______ What does that mean? My body absorbs a toxic amount of iron from the foods that I eat. ______ What happens when your body absorbs too much iron? The excess iron has no place to go and it builds up within your organs. Liver, heart, pancreas and joints are the most common places. Over time the build up will cause damage to your organs. ______ Can you die from Hemochromatosis? Yes, if it goes undetected and left untreated your organs will eventually fail. The key is to find out early. Most people never know they have it and suffer from heart disease, liver disease or diabetes and never realize the true cause of their disease. If they knew they could treat the real cause of their condition. ______ What is treatment if you have #Hemochromatosis? The most common and easiest treatment is blood removal (phlebotomy). Yep, you go in as frequently as needed to remove blood (just like donating) and this removes the excess iron. I’ll have to do this for the rest of my life. Small price to pay to stay healthy. ______ What are the tests I should ask for from my doctor? You can request a full iron profile blood test which includes Serum Iron, TIBC and Serum ferritin. Let me tell you, this is what I had and my iron levels were higher than normal but not enough to cause concern for my doctor. I ultimately had to push for further testing against her wishes and that’s when I found out. You can also order a genetic test kit online if you wish to keep your results private.
