For this week's Takeover Sunday, we invited Jeremiah Sorrells ( @j.sorrellsphoto ) to introduce himself and talk about a few of his astrophotos.⠀ . My name is Jeremiah, and I'm an astrophotographer from Boise, Idaho. I love to make landscape and deep space astrophotos -- several of the deep space images were taken right from my driveway in Boise. I use an array of gear, but most of it is based around my Sony body/lens combo, my trusty ASI1600 cooled mono camera, and an 80mm Stellarvue refractor. . I've been wanting to image this nebula since before I started doing astrophotography, and it all came together for me this weekend at the Alvord Desert in Oregon. Dark skies, cold temps, awesome company and good running equipment finally lined up! I've spent the last month watching tutorials, taking classes and practicing every night on my image acquisition and post-processing techniques, which came together well in what is probably my favorite astro-image so far. .⠀ The Rosette Nebula is a large spherical H II region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way Galaxy. The open cluster NGC 2244 is closely associated with the nebulosity, the stars of the cluster having been formed from the nebula's matter. The cluster and nebula lie at a distance of some 5,000 light-years from Earth, and measure roughly 130 light years in diameter. The radiation from the young stars excites the atoms in the nebula, causing them to emit radiation themselves producing the emission nebula we see. The mass of the nebula is estimated to be around 10,000 solar masses. . My website is finally up! Please visit: www.jsorrellsphoto.com/galleries/astrophotography/ to see most of the astro-images I've completed in the last 2 years! . For our Feature Friday post this week we want to direct your attention to the page of @astrodeacon. Deacon is an astronomer based in the Western United States, and who has a collection of images taken from some fantastically dark locations ranging from Death Valley to the Grand Tetons. Deacon uses a Celestron CGEM DX, EdgeHD 1100 telescope, and a variety of cameras included a Canon 6D MkII and a ZWO ASI290mc. His images include a great selection of deep sky and solar system targets, with our favorite pieces being the fantastic planetary work he's been putting out recently. We definitely recommend you head over to his page and check it out today because these images just keep getting better and better! . . Feature Friday is our chance at High Point Scientific to give some appreciation back to the amazingly talented people who make this hobby what it is. Whether or not you purchased your equipment from us we still appreciate good astronomy when we see it, so whether you're an astrophotographer, night scope photographer, or just a visual astronomer with some really cool gear we'd love to see your work! Messier 12 or M12 (also designated NGC 6218) is a globular cluster in the constellation of Ophiuchus. In dark conditions this cluster can be faintly seen with a pair of binoculars. Resolving the stellar components requires a telescope with an aperture of 8 in (20 cm) or greater. In a 10 in (25 cm) scope, the granular core shows a diameter of 3′ (arcminutes) surrounded by a 10′ halo of stars. Located roughly 3° in the sky from the cluster M10 and 5.6° from the star Lambda Ophiuchi, M12 is about 15,700 light-years from Earth and is approaching us at a velocity of 16 km/s. M12 has a spatial diameter of about 75 light-years, with its brightest stars being 12th magnitude (thirteen of which are documented variable stars).⠀ .⠀ .⠀ M12 16.0 arcmin in diameter with a visual magnitude of +6.69. It is going to transit Wednesday night/Thursday morning at 12:08:32 am (MST) on June 20, 2019. Last year I, for the first and so far only time, drove a couple hours away from the Houston City lights to my astro clubs dark site. I spent all night imaging the Iris Nebula and have been sitting on the data all this time. Well it's finally time I present the newest image for my collection. ------- Info: The striking blue color of the Iris Nebula is created by light from the bright star SAO 19158 reflecting off of a dense patch of normally dark dust. Not only is the star itself mostly blue, but blue light from the star is preferentially reflected by the dust -- the same effect that makes Earth's sky blue. The brown tint of the pervasive dust comes partly from photoluminescence -- dust converting ultraviolet radiation to red light. The bright blue portion of the Iris Nebula spans about six light years. The Iris Nebula, pictured here, lies about 1300 light years distant and can be found with a small telescope toward the constellation of Cepheus. Description source: NASA APOD

M13 -Take two. I miraculously got a clear night a couple days ago so decided to image M13 with my astro mono camera to see if there was an improvement to get over my last year attempt with my trusted Nikon D5100. Image #2 is from last year with the Nikon. There is some difference in light gathering power. The Bayers matrix in a DSLR does some victims... The astro camera picked up a lot more stars. I used the same scope and was at the same place with same light pollution and same total exposure time: 2 hours Equipment used: Celestron 8inch SCT ZWO 1600MM camera and Starizona flattener reducer. Globular clusters are densely packed with stars. There is 150 of them orbiting around the Milky Way. M13 is about 145 light-years in diameter and 22,000 light years away (which is next door) and is one the biggest one. It is composed of several hundred thousand stars, some of which are as old as the universe. Stars will sometimes collide and form new stars which are blue in color. In 1974, in the hope of reaching potential extra-terrestrial civilizations, a message was sent towards the cluster with the help of the Arecibo radio-telescope. The message encoded information about the human race, DNA, atomic numbers, Earth's position and other information. There is very little chance the message will ever be heard as technologically advanced civilizations need a stable environment to developped such as what humans have enjoyed on this planet. Due to the close proximity of stars in this cluster, collisions between them are likely happening often. As a result, planets around them are likely crushed or tossed around quite a bit making life very difficult to establish itself and evolve. @stephanhamel_astrophotography #amateurastrophotography #amateurastrophotographyezine #astronomy #astrophotography #astronomy #astrophotographer #astrophoto #universetoday #astronomy #practicalastrophotographymagazine #practicalastrophotography #igworldclub #igworldclub_astrophotography #deepspace #messier13 #highpointscientific #astrography_ #astro_photography #astronomer #practicalastrophotographymagazine #deepspace #deepsky #celestron #celestronrocks #celestrontelescope

This week for Feature Friday we're going to take a look at the @_astro_dude_. This account is another great example of the fantastic images that can be taken with smaller setups like an 80mm Esprit from @skywatcherusa, an Advanced VX mount from @celestronuniverse, and an 80d (DSLR) from @canonusa. The Astro Dude has a classic Celestron reflector as well, but regardless of which scope he is using the images on this account all have an impressive level of detail that any budding astrophotographer should be proud of! He has done some great work with wide field shots like star trails and the milky way, and his images of the moon and eclipses are top notch as well. We can't wait to see this account continue to grow and we recommend you head over to his page and check it out today! . . This week for Feature Friday we're shining the light on Martin Kermit, aka @urban.astronomer. Martin has a great selection of targets including galaxies and nebulae alike, and he does so from the relatably poor-sky conditions that so many of us have to work in. He has some really great write-ups attached to his images which cover everything from facts on the object to processing techniques he employed, so for anyone looking for a bit of substance beyond just the photos themselves, we would definitely recommend you head on over to his page and give him a follow today! . .
