It's made from red silk, interlined with 2 layers of coutil and fully boned with cane. The gold decoration is actually a gold cord, stitched on black felt, which was cut away after. The sleeves and partlet are hand embroidered with Perle 5. The collar and cuffs are loose items, pinned to the garment. The supporter (or supportasse / underpropper / rebato / picadil / piccadill / whisk) in previous post was not the first one I made. Here is another one, which I made for my Isabel de Bourbon gown. Stitched underneath the ruff, the metal supporter carries the weight of the large ruff and keeps it flat and straight. They were visible underneath the ruff and therefore beautifully shaped. See slide 2 of how it's made: 1. This is a picture of an original supporter, my example, Dutch, copper, c. 1600-1610. I enlarged the picture to true size, to serve as a pattern. 2. Cut pieces of metal wire of 28 cm. Make the large bend with a round wooden stick or handle. Make the small bends with a round nose plier. 3. Twist two of these metal parts together and place on the pattern. Follow the shape of the pattern till you went all around. I left an opening of c. 5 cm. 4. Take a narrow metal hair band and make a perfect circle of it, same size as the middle part on the pattern. Leave an opening of 5 cm. Twist the loose ends of the smaller metal part around the hairband and cut excess wire away.
