Elston Chapel, Nottinghamshire.
What an amazing little chapel!
It reminded me so much of Lead, but I think even better! The chapel is mostly 12th Century as can be seen in the zigzag decoration of the door, although the windows are 14th Century.
The interior furnishings, such as the box pews and pulpit are 19th Century but because they are so simple and not decorative they sit very well in this space.
There is also some great graffiti on the door (1717)

Another church from yesterday. This is All Saints Beeby. Georgian box pews, alongside Victorian. Victorian ornate cross tops a14th Century chancel screen. The church is built of ironstone with ashlar dressing, providing a lovely colour. Apparently the tower has no spire because the masons fell out with one another and fell off... whether this is true I do not know!

Little St Nicholas Littleborough, Nottinghamshire.
My favourite thing about this church is the history of the area. The church is built on what was the Roman town of Segelocum and is thought to have possibly been founded by William the Conquer in the late 11th Century. So much history here.

St Mary’s Ayston, Rutland. Mostly 13th Century. The wall paintings would be quite something of more were uncovered!
The knight and lady were originally the top of a tomb chest and have been outside hence being very worn but I don’t know anything else about them - probably 14th Century according to the text in the church.

'You fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep...' It is rumoured that this door was the inspiration for Tolkien's door to Moria.

St Gregory’s Fledborough dates to the 14th Century.
There is some beautiful early medieval glass and fragments mixed with later 19th Century examples. I love the pre-raphaelite Knight.
I don’t know who the effigies are but the lady holding the heart is lovely. These are around 14th Century.
