2 Shot Seal & Walk Hockey Drill! Great drill for defenceman to work on walking the blue line & shooting the puck! The coach can chip the puck off of the glass or boards to start the drill so the D can practice trapping & settling the puck before they walk the blue line. . Drill details: The players should be lined up on the blue lines on their forehand side. The drill starts when the coach plays a puck up the wall to the player on the blue line. The coach can play the puck high off the glass and force the players to knock the puck down with their hands, use hard rims, or play the puck off of the wall at angles to make it tough on the players. The players will then walk the puck along the blue line with their head up as though they are looking for a shooting lane. After the cone, they can take the first shot. After the shot they will skate forward and transition around the cones and look for a pass from the coach to make a one-time shot. To keep more players involved, you can have the player who just finished the drill step into the position of the coach so and they can be the passer. . Footwork Shots! Here are two hockey drills that work on footwork, passing, and shooting. Encourage lots of communication along with cheers & stick taps for big goals and big saves!!!! It is a great drill for half ice situations or stations. In one drill the cones are set up parallel to the goal line and in the other one they are set up perpendicular. In both drills, the players start outside the zone and inline with the face off dots. You can add additional obstacles for more skill work. Details: There is one player that starts in the corner with the pucks. On one side the players do a figure eight while receiving passes from the corner and shooting. On the other side, they are going around the cones while transitioning forwards and backwards and making passes to the player in the corner. Decision Time 2 vs. 1 Station Drill! The drill is great for station based or ADM type practices as it requires only one-quarter of the ice. The drill works on decision making in a 2 on 1 situation. The coach in this drill can be switched with a defensive player. . Coaching Points: . 1) Offensive players should make fakes to attempt to open up the defenceman so they can make a clear pass or shot. 2) Offensive players should make sharp turns so they are moving horizontally across the ice when making the drop pass. 3) Drop pass should be to Player 2's forehand. 4) Player 2 needs to have eyes on defenceman to read the situation. 5) Make sure both players stop at net for rebound. . Wall Retrieval Station: great drill to work on handling pucks along the wall & opening up for a pass! . Drill Details: The goal of this drill is to get players a bit more comfortable along the wall and provides a situation you can use to teach them techniques on how to handle pucks along the wall. . This station can be set up to use half of one of the zones. Pucks should be set behind the goal crease in the middle of the ice with the coach. If you are using both sides then two coaches can share the pucks and each will rim the puck to opposite sides. . A tire or cone can be placed inline with the dots at around the top of the circles. Players are lined up along the blue line with the first player inline with the dots. Player 1 will skate up around the tire towards the wall, open up to face the puck as it is rimmed around. . The players should time it so they are skating up ice as they gather the puck. Encourage players to move their feet and keep their heads up as they gather the puck. Once they gather the puck they will make a pass to the next player in line, go around the tire, open up and call for the puck, then receive the puck back to take a shot on net. As skill, speed or age level increases, aim to practice the drill faster and with head up! . The concepts of this drill include cycling, opening up, and shooting off the pass. . Coaching Points: 1) Communicate - Call for the puck on the cycle and on pass to front of the net. 2) Open up and shoot off the pass if you are on your off-hand. 3) If you are on your strong hand make sure your bottom hand is strong to shoot off the pass. 4) Make sure to bounce the puck off wall so it is easy for P2 to retrieve. .
