Lateral movement off the wall is all about creating options. I often see player look to immediately move towards the net when catching the puck at the blue line. However, I typically recommend moving laterally across the blue line before moving towards the net. When a defenseman explodes laterally across the offensive zone blue line, they accomplish a few things- get themselves in higher percentage shooting position, sidestep the lane that is likely filled by the other teams wing so a shot won’t hit shin pads, open up towards a center lane to potentially go deeper into the zone, still have the ability to dump it deep if needed & also open up a safety release back to the wall on for a waiting teammate above the hash marks. This can be run as a continuous drill. The extra net mimics the wing covering on the point as a screen, forcing the player to move out of the covered lane (avoiding blocked shots in a game). The first D retrieves the puck after the shot, does a reverse behind the net, then makes a quick up to the next waiting 2nd D on the point. The player in front of the net works to get a tip & the sequence continues. The progression is to add additional D movements down low, a D to D on the blue line, or add a wing on the wall for an outlet pass from the point. Lots of options that can create good in-game habits.
