As their name suggests, they are covered in ‘cilia’, little hairlike appendages on the outside of the cell. Depending on the particular organism, the cilia can function in movement and feeding. They have a mouth, also called the oral groove, that is covered with specialized oral cilia that helps suck in food particles and deliver them to the food vacuoles within the cell for digestion. Ciliates are found in all moist or aquatic environments and I recently read that it is estimated that about 90% of ciliates living today haven’t been described or discovered. This highlights the bigger issue that protists are very largely understudied, undersampled, and not always reliably classified taxonomically. . I don’t know the actual ID of this particular ciliate but I found in freshwater, which means that the inside of the cell has a higher solute concentration than the outside environment. This causes water to diffuse into the cell (osmosis) in an attempt to create some form of equilibrium between the cell and environment. BUT with more water comes more pressure and the cell can only tolerate so much without bursting. I’ve seen and recorded this before and typically, the organelles and food particles spill out and then the cell is dead. However, this video shows a weird thing that I’ve never seen before. The organism appears to begin this process by then reseals its cell off to the outside environment and then swims away, seemingly okay. After it did this, I continued to watch and record and the new, albeit smaller ciliate, appeared fine...super strange.
