Sad to hear that some kids had to go back to school on August 1st!!! Many more are starting next week on Monday! Besides not getting much of a summer, giving another month to the molding of the system... ‍♀️‍♂️ When I first took @michael_wolfe_patterson out of the school system, it really was because I felt it was crushing him. Crushing his creativity. Crushing his love of learning. Crushing his individuality. ...all the things that made him unique and wonderful! So I said “no.” And maybe you’ve said “no” to this too. Or maybe you just need to be reminded you’re on the right track! And, you can say “no” too. #unschoolingmom2mom

I gave the kids an incentive before Jeff left for Honduras that I would take them all out for ice cream the day before he is due to arrive home. He arrives home tomorrow night at midnight, so I packed them in the van and we went garage sale hunting and out for ice cream! I found some vintage quilts, odds and ends for the co op, and our favorite thing...a big box of vintage paper dolls!!! The girls have had such fun sorting them all out and playing! The boys are in the background with play doh, and I’m making cold brew coffee and snacks in the kitchen. ❤️❤️❤️

Tomorrow is the day! We start our 9th year of homeschooling tomorrow. I’m still pinching myself that I have had the privilege of doing life day-in-and-day-out with my kiddos. I’ve actually been homeschooling longer than my youngest has even been alive. ———— I am so thankful that we have a great homeschool room bc it really works best for my personality. But, we came from a very small home before with very limited space, and homeschooling still worked well! Make the best use of your home and the space(s) you have! ———— I will say, though, that a bit of organization goes a loooooong way. Magazine holders are one of my favorite tools for holding small/thin books that tend to fall over or get lost on the shelves. ———— Another thing I’ve implemented is using a file folder system for my kiddos’ “creations.” They each have a hanging file in our small filing container (see last picture), and when one of them creates something...it gets filed away. Once his/her folder is “bulging,” I will cull through it — without my kiddo’s help so that we don’t keep everything. ———— The boys and I are using @thegoodandthebeautiful for science this year. I am utilizing the space on the inside of one closet door for all of our science vocabulary and lab safety rules. #workwithwhatyouhave ———— I know that organization isn’t everyone’s strong area, and my biggest piece of advice is to ask a friend. Most people have a certain friend who finds organizing and decluttering fun. I’m that friend ‍♀️ for a lot of my friends. To be honest, it makes my heart happy to help people with my strong suit — and I am honored when they ask. It’s definitely a lived in space Although I would like to rearrange some things in this picture, this is reality and how we live day to day. ⁣ ⁣ Our home is small but it’s cozy. I see our living/homeschool space as the heart of our home. While I have dreamed of having a dedicated homeschool room, I kinda like having us all piled together in one space. It blurs the line between schooling and home that much more. ⁣ ⁣ It’s wonderful to be inspired by other people’s spaces. But ultimately we cannot recreate someone else’s home or life for that matter. Our lives and our homes are not a one size fits all situation. ⁣ ⁣ All that to say, it’s important not to miss out on the life you are living because your to busy comparing it to someone else’s. So often we can strive for “best”, when it’s really more about making it “better”. Year 9 homeschooling and still loving it! * * * Today I’m Organizing books and schedules so everyone get a chance to sit with mom through their own hard subjects. I’ve written down all that we hope to accomplish each day and now they are organizing their own schedules to each of their own personalities and wants (some like to sleep in and gradually increase the level of brain requirements throughout the day- others want to get all the hard work done first thing and enjoy the rest of the afternoon☺️ it’s very intriguing to me as I watch each of them grow and form into an adult!) 8 year old: "You know, when we first started reading all this history about the Romans and Saxons and Britons and Picts, I was surprised that you were ok with me hearing all that violence since you always say no to video games since they are violent. But now that we've read so much I think I can see why." Me: "Ok. Why do think I let you read violent history and say no to violent video games?” 8 year old: "In the video games people die and thats it, no funerals, no one cries, no one makes food to bring to people that are sad. No one digs a grave. But in my book when people die, stuff happens because of the death. People left behind go to war. There are funerals and monuments and speeches. Sometimes good stuff, sometimes bad stuff, but always something happens. Am I saying it right? Death matters in my book."

DAY 1: Annnnnd we’re off! The first day of our #bravegrownspaces back to school photo journal is SCHOOLROOM! I’m so excited to see your schoolrooms today! Last year I was amazed by your incredible spaces! ⁣ ⁣ Because we have so many topics to cover over the next month, I thought it would help to use separate tags for each day in addition to our main tag. Hopefully this will make it easier to find each new day without scrolling for a million years. Today’s is #bravegrownspaces_schoolroom.⁣ ⁣ Keeping it real: I also wanted to post an additional photo each day showing the messy that’s just out of camera shot, to let you see the messy and gritty here, not just the perfectly curated. ⁣ ⁣ ➡️ You may have seen the first photo a few days ago when I posted it, but this has been the state of our schoolroom most of the summer while we’ve recovered from a flood that happened on May 8th. ➡️ The other photos show the extent of the damage. we’ve been redoing the floors in 1400 sq feet of our 1900 sq ft house. But the great news is, yesterday we finished laying floor in our LAST room! Now all we have left is getting the house back in order, which I’m using this challenge as motivation to do! Wahoo!!
