It's been a week since we visited our favorite indoor playground. So today, we will be sharing our Kindercity experience. ♡ As you all know we are an advocate of learning through play. And we all had so much fun. There are mini villages for pretend plays that Zoe really love. And there's too many kind of slides. Which Zoe all tried. DIY Garden Sensory Bin: . Materials: • black pebbles • plastic rake, shovel, and pots • artificial flowers and carrots • @safariltd insects (bought from @toobsinbulk) • white bin and grass mat from @daisophilippines . I added customized numbers on wooden chips (from my shop @shop.thecrafterteacher) to make it an instant counting activity

To be honest, when she got spools of yarn from the storage one night, I wasn’t the most enthusiastic (I thought tangles and I was tired). But then she also got a square peg board and started wrapping it with yarn or weaving the yarn through the holes and then she also got a basket to put all her materials in (see last photo). Clearly, that was work. And while when she was starting, gathering her materials, I was thinking about tangles and messes; when she worked more and I observed more, I then started thinking about Sensitive Period—for refinement of movement. It reminded me of what Maria Montessori wrote in an article entitiled When Your Child Knows Better Than You: This young life that we are trying to mould needs no forcing and squeezing, no correcting or fault-finding to develop its intelligence and character. Nature looks after children in the same way as she sees that the tadpole grows into a frog when the time is ready. “But,” I can hear you say, “shall we leave our children to do as they like? How can they know what is best for them when they have had no experience?... And I would answer, “Have you ever given your children a chance even for one day to do what they like without interference?” Try it and you will be astonished. • So I just made a note to find more ways to provide more opportunities for prescisely what she’s doing; when the next day, my sister (who didn’t know about this girl’s work the night before), gave her this weaving work as pasalubong (present) from Japan! Ah it’s amazing how sometimes it feels that even the universe knows! Relinquish some of that control, friends. “We say we correct them for their own good and a great deal of time we honestly believe it. But it is strange how often what we feel to be their good amounts to the same thing as our own comfort... But if we change our whole attitude and say to ourselves, ‘My child knows what is best for him. The children and I created some felt hands as I slowly introduced #PreschoolMathAtHome by Kate Snow to the Little Man, another recommendation from the #WellTrainedMind. At first, we only made one hand to target counting up to 5. Then I had the idea of using different colors to differentiate fives from one another. That's when I realized it was also a great opportunity to teach about God's wonderful design in diversity. Thankfully, we had #ShaiLinne's book 'God Made Me and You' to help explain this deep topic about color, race, and God's grace. I was raised in a Chinese church, and I mostly grew up with people who are the same as I am. Missiologists call this the "Homogenous Unit Principle," which explains that we are drawn to people whom we are most like. This is true to some extent. But there are times when race and culture become blinding idols, and we make light of sin by calling it ethnocentrism instead of the evil that is racism or ethnic bigotry. The Bible continually speaks against my remaining depravity while I seek to love and serve those who are radically different from I am. I am grateful that we now have the context of a local multicultural church to practice this. I love that homeschooling has given us more opportunities to delve into difficult topics such as celebrating God's plan of calling different people to Himself. I am also thankful for days when learning and parenting can go hand in hand, just like today. #HappyMath #TheClassicalPreschool

Today’s MESSY SENSORY PLAY activity: Chocolate Mud! ❤️ . Found an expired brownie mix in our pantry and instead of throwing it right away, we thought of using it first for some messy activity. We simply added water to the mix, dumped in some animals and trucks to make them “muddy”, and afterwards, “washed” the trucks and gave the animals a “bath” in a bin of water.

My #titamonicagellerofmanila posts started in 2015, which was the year we started officially homeschooling Liam and built the boys a homeschool room. From the start, I already knew I it was goint to be a #NeatMeetsStyle project—I wanted it to be fun to look at (for Mama), and a blast to spend time in (for the boys). It had to be well-stocked (I grew up with 4 siblings and we stressed our mom out way too many times because we forgot to mention some school supply or art material we needed for school) but I wanted to corral all materials without taking up too much space so this corner was born. Again, because I am very (VERY) maarte, it had to look good. The sheer amount of materials can look too busy so it was essential to choose clear, coordinating boxes. Colored bins would have made the room look like Rainbow Brite’s lair. Labels and see-through containers make everything visible and within reach, which is an instant invitation to learn and create. The upstais homeschool area was born out of a need to have a secondary “room” for Liam or Luca to do quiet, solo work. This area also houses our science materials and is more spacious and conducive to experiments, so it was christened the “Science Area” by the boys. I have also incorporated Montessori-inspired activities for Luca, so his Montessori (ish) shelves are also here. Homeschooling is an ever-evolving journey for our family. These organized areas make my job easier as a home educator, and make learning organic—the environment itself fosters exploration and creativity, so the boys can satisfy their curious minds just by hanging out at home. It makes every effort worth it when my boys tell me they’d rather stay home than go elsewhere because they have freedom to do so many things here.
