Honey mushrooms are edible and sometimes choice. Those growing on hardwoods seem better tasting than those on firs, although the differences may be species specific. Here, Armillaria ostoyae, is fruiting on climax alders, which are transitioning out as the fir forests recover, dominating the canopy and shading out the once pioneering alders that typically come in directly after a clear cut. Both a saprophyte and a parasite, these species (including A. mellea and A. gallica) project black, cross netted rhizomorphic mycelium, the cause of laminated root rot. Armillaria ostoyae claim to fame is that it is the largest organism in the world, with a colony in eastern Oregon U.S. that is more than 2200 acres in size, more than 2000 years old. The trees are killed in mass, and the ecology transforms into meadows. Honey Mushrooms, and Entoloma abortivum... sometimes called Cloud Mushrooms, or Shrimp of the Woods.

I discovered this lovely display of Shrimp Mushrooms, A.K.A. Aborted Entoloma (Entoloma abortivum). They are growing with both Entoloma and Ringless Honey Mushrooms. . . Most Entolomas are known to be poisonous. But after they become parasitized by the Honey Mushroom they become a sought after edible. Oh and honey mushrooms are a known edible as well. . . There is also argument as to which mushroom parasitizes which, but most importantly, as I say it time and time again. Always be 100% positive with your ID of any wild mushrooms or plants. . . My experience eating. . . well more like tasting these Shrimp Mushrooms was unpleasantly bitter, so I spit them out before consuming anything. Pay attention to your senses always. Even though I know my ID was spot on, the taste was off and unpalatable. I reached out to other foragers asking about my experience and they expressed that maybe the ones I found weren’t young enough. . . I’ll give them a try again next time I can find some.

Infected plants will deteriorate, although they may exhibit prolific flower or fruit production shortly before death.
