Here’s a look at the Lego Star Wars Hoth Echo Base set from 2011! This set retailed for £90/$90 and contains 773 pieces which makes the Echo Base, a Tauntaun, a cannon, a speeder and 8 minifigures! Due to the size of this set, today I’ll be focusing on solely the build, and tomorrow I’ll do an in-depth look at the minifigures and the side builds! As you can see, this set can hinge in the middle and can come together to form an enclosed structure, or you can unfold it completely so it forms a straight line! Looking at the left hand side of the base first, this area features the entrance to the base and a Tauntaun stable! Above the entrance to the base is a pair of rotatable blasters, each with 2 flick fire missiles, and in front of the entrance there is another blaster which can rotate 360’. To the left of the entrance there is the gates to the Tauntaun’s stable. These can be unlocked and dropped down which allows the tauntaun to pass through - these gates also have a leafy attached to them for the tauntaun to eat which is a simple but appreciated inclusion! Inside there is a refilling station, then there is a stand which can hold the tantaun’s saddle and reigns, and then there are a couple of empty crates which will come into use later! Externally, the right hand side of the base is much more simple with some of the large rock pieces. In the middle of this area there are a couple of panels which can fold down to reveal an easy access armoury to ensure the troops can resupply quick! Inside there is a massive rotating radar dish and below that there is a falling icicle feature! To the right of the radar dish there is a removable cargo crane. This can increase in size and has a cylinder that can slide side to side. This does seem like an odd inclusion but I do remember using it with some snowspeeders back in the day! Next there is the control room which features some great stickered panels (check out the AT-AT’s and the shield generators!), and to the right of that is the medical bay with rotating bed and openable bacta tank! Overall, back in 2011 this set really was THE Hoth set to get! It was a set like no other and one which to this day I still recommend!
