Back in December when I stood along my batch mates taking the Hippocratic oath, i had chills running down my spine, from the excitement that I finally did it. I finally after spending 5 years of my life, after all ups and downs, I finally managed to pass extremely torturous days of my life. I am finally a DOCTOR. It was a beautiful experience to stand there, raise hand, swear by heart, to put others before ourselves, to never compromise on patients’ health. I remember i was so happy that day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Months later, during my house job,i feel the blood in my veins is cold. I don’t know if i have it in me or not, to deserve that title of doctor. Its very hard to see patients dying in hands. Back to last week when i was posted in ICU, i see people dying, in spite of all the efforts, death conquered them. It’s terrifying to see a person you keep checking on every hour is just deteriorating. His platelet count is decreasing, he is bleeding from orifices, he is having blood transfusion reaction and you cant do anything and he suddenly dies. All this anxiety, all this panic attacks cone to this one thing that I don’t deserve this. I am not skilled enough. I know a lot of us think its matter of life and death, but its a huge burden to bear. One of my biggest fear of my upcoming life is, will i be able to save a human life? Being posted in ER,there are a lot of ups and downs you need to face. It was almost 7:00 am. My senior woke me up from a nap in a hectic emergency call and sent me to ER(EMERGENCY ROOM) to attend emergencies there. Being tired and exhausted already doing straight 12 hours ICU i couldn’t move but I reached ER anyway. A stretcher entered in ER with an elderly woman over it. She was accompanied by her two daughters and her husband. Her abdomen was distended. Her eyes were still. She was not breathing. We rushed towards her. We checked her pulse and didn’t find it. We did CPR. We did every possible medical treatment we could do. We did her ECG and eventually it was time to break the bad news. Our RMO told her family “INKA INTEKAL HOGYA HAI” And then her daughters standing beside her started crying. They couldn’t believe our words! One of her daughter said Doctor aap please kuch kren, kisi bhi tarhan ammi ko wapis laeaye !! Abhi to ammi bilkul theek then. That moment was heart wrenching. I couldn’t see them crying. My heart broke. My eyes were all teary. They lost their mother. They lost their whole world. I sometimes question myself why I chose this field? I get caught in a lot of negativities. I have to face a lot of challenges. People want us to do a miracle and save their loved once and we sometimes are not able to do anything. I feel terrible when attendants have a hope in their eyes that we will save their patient and we can not. But I always get an answer that I’m chosen for this. ~ The truth is, Airports have witnessed more sincere kisses than wedding chapels & Hospitals have heard more sincere prayers than churches. This was the first time I visited OT (Operation Theatre) back in my housejob days in the Oral & Maxillofacial surgery dept. I got to witness the surgery of a patient who got his mandible fractured in a motorcycle accident. Oh God! I miss hospital days. Since I got a lot of messages asking me about house job at aga khan hospital I decided it’s better to give my personal opinion and experience here. Now let me make this clear, it’s entirely my opinion and I do not want to force anyone to make any particular decision after reading this. You guys asked, I decided to reply. In order to apply, you need to fill the form. Now where to get the form? It’s available online. You have to fill it online and then print it. The form itself is a huge process. Like I hate filling in the same thing once and then twice and then thrice and the form is not just a page but an entire booklet. In the form you need to fill in a paragraph of I guess 1500 words that why do you want to do house job at AKU toh Khair wo achay se karlena Then the next step is a theory exam which has muktiple choice questions from English, medicine and surgery. I don’t remember answering any peadiatrics or gynaecology obstretrics questions. After the theory is an interview exam if you pass that, voila you’re selected. Another most asked question is when to apply? They have a deadline. Ours was some date in December and the house job was starting from the first of January. Now another problem that Dowites have to face (at least my batch did) is that the house job at AKU begins from the first whereas our exams end after the first week of January. And the requirements of the house job form is the degree certificate or PMDC form which you get after you have passed your final semester and got your marksheet. This definitely takes 2 months at least. But, if you pass the interview you have to give them full assurance that you’ll do your housejob at AKU and give in your documents as soon as you get them and then start your housejob immediately after your exams. Next commonly asked question is if I applied? I applied for the housejob at AKU but failed the theory exam. If you ask me if it was tough? It wasn’t. Not a lot. I gave my exam after my ninth semester and I had zero knowledge about surgery hence, I wrongly answered a lot of those questions. Why did I opt for this housejob? The housejob at AKU is hectic from what I’ve heard.Continued in the comments

1st April 2019. Let’s talk next year about how this new experience goes by. But until today, I am 50% excited and a 50% stressed about my postings. I have opted for gynae and doctors know how tough of a field it can be. Also Ramzan. My first day was F I N E. Nothing extra ordinary but saw the birth of two baby boys in the OT today and Masha Allah Masha Allah they were the best thing that happened to me today! May Allah bless them I just wanted to pick them up and do all the squishy squishy things you wanna do to babies I also named them one was subhan and the other bilal and Masha Allah they were both very healthyyy hope to make memories this new year ❤️
