They have long been used in magic rituals [...] The English name of the plant derived from Latin mandragora through French main-de-gloire. The root is hallucinogenic and narcotic. In sufficient quantities, it induces a state of unconsciousness and was used as an anaesthetic for surgery in ancient times. Fiddlehead is a general term people used where I grew up in coastal south-central Alaska, said fiddlehead referring to the spiralling young fronds before they unfurl themselves. When I was 12, I was instructed in Wilderness School to eat fiddleheads if I was ever desperate and lost in the woods (a not-uncommon occurrence where I grew up, as almost everything is wilderness save the few towns dotted about). However, Wikipedia tells me fiddleheads are poisonous until cooked (which I’ve only sampled a few times), so maybe it’s a good thing that I have never become permanently lost in the woods (so far).
