The Nayland Rock promenade shelter in #Margate may look like ordinary seafront seating (though it is Grade II listed!) but it was here that T.S. We've never given our girl "screen time." We've never been able to afford a tablet & haven't ever felt the need for one. A has never been able to use her vision to look at a screen either. In the last year we've seen tremendous growth in how she can use her vision (I may talk about that later because it's a unique journey) & started looking into some services that our Deaf Mentor told us about to provide distance communication. The next step was talking to the DeafBlind Technical Assistance Program to make sure we access the right program and ask for the right things. We filled out an application for ICanConnect and had an eval. A few months later and we were blessed with some awesome equipment. A now has an Ipad complete with case and stand, bone conducting headphones, a central alert system and a dynamic Communication App. She can now call friends and family, feel the music reverberate inside her body (she immediately started to dance to her fave song Bodak Yellow) and we can start to teach her how her bed shaker alarm works and how her doorbell works. She's never had someone announce their presence other than stomping. We're working on getting a helpful AAC team together (that's guaranteed to be an uphill battle). Long term goal is improving her fine motor so she can sign fluidly but she Needs a way to express herself right now, it's hard to know what she knows academically and she struggles with us misunderstanding her approximated signs. ICanConnect.org is a Nationwide program, but if we were in IL still we wouldn't have known about it or been told. We experienced no outreach from the IL School for the Deaf & Blind. I say this because there is no nationwide standard of how outreach is done (or even how Deaf kids are taught language) so there are many kids and adults missing out on these things. If you know someone who is both Deaf or HOH and VI or blind or has CVI please tell them about ICanConnect, it's such an awesome program and there is a huge variety of items in the catalog it can be So helpful for building connection for so many people. #icanconnect #deaf #deafblind #cvi #corticalvisualimpairment #accessibility

From his letters we know that Eliot wrote 50 lines of ‘The Waste Land’ sitting in the Nayland Rock Shelter on Margate Sands. Within the poem, he references Margate; “On Margate Sands. I can connect nothing with nothing.” —— Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963 and grew up in Margate. She studied at Maidstone College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London and has exhibited extensively internationally including solo and group exhibitions in Holland, Germany, Japan, Australia and America. In 2007 Emin represented Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale, becoming the second female artist to ever do so. That same year, Emin was made a Royal Academician and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal College of Art, a Doctor of Letters from the University of Kent and a Doctor of Philosophy from London Metropolitan University.
