I love watching #tryachapter tags on BookTube. This tag involves picking a few books from your TBR, sampling the first chapter (or roughly 20 pages) from the book, and reporting back on first impressions and resultant reading plans. As a dedicated book monogamist, there’s an enticing freedom in experimenting with your TBR this way. Here is my take on this tag: _ DRIVE YOUR PLOW OVER THE BONES OF THE DEAD The opening chapter of this MBI nominated novel takes place during a bleak winter’s night in a remote Polish hamlet. I’m not yet sure where the story is going, but there is a strong sense of mystery and isolation, following characters on the fringes of society. And I’m loving the writing. Definite five star potential here. _ HAZARDS OF TIME TRAVEL This dystopian novel feels very 1984, but updated for the 21st century, complete with electronic devices listening in on conversations. The opening chapters introduce the semantics of the new world order, and the mood is suitably claustrophobic. So far, so good. _ THE HANDMAID’S TALE I’m embarrassed to admit I haven’t read this yet. And with The Testament coming out later this year, I need to rectify this. The writing is pared-down but perfectly pitched and the book feels urgently relevant. I did not want to stop reading... _ RADIANCE Wow. That prologue was on fire — playful, self-aware and utterly thrilling! This book seems to blend literary fiction, sci-fi and meta fiction in a creative cocktail, and I’m here for it. _ And the winner is... _ All four have intrigued me sufficiently to continue reading, but I’m feeling Handmaid’s Tale right now, possibly followed by Radiance. Is it even worth reviewing Handmaids? "Kryształowe motyle" to moja pierwsza czerwcowa lektura. To trudna opowieść o żałobie po stracie dziecka i o różnych sposobach jej przeżywania. Pokazuje historie trzech różnych kobiet, które mają za sobą to tragiczne przeżycie, ich rodziny i to, jak sobie z tym radzą. Mimo, iż tematyka jest warta uwagi i potrzebne jest jej poruszanie, jakoś nie polubiłam się z tą książką. Nie mogę jej wiele zarzucić, czyta się ją dość łatwo, styl jest taki jak trzeba, ale miałam wrażenie, że jest to opowieść dość chaotyczna. Die Idee dahinter, die starke Protagonistin und auch die Fantasyelemente wurden wirklich klasse umgesetzt - und (ich mag das bei Fantasy durchaus) gab es eine tolle Liebesgeschichte.
