I am Proud to present you “Still We Rise “, my piece for the Amya Angelou Community High School This piece was realized in collaboration with the @jr @insideoutproject . I used 5 portraits the project realized as a base for my work in order to show in a strong and authentic way the phrase “Still We rise”. It is the schools motto taken from Angelous third volume Still I Rise. Painted in 4 days, the mural wants to show the actual situation of South Central Los Angeles and the communities history. Before going and since my childhood, the image of the city was build in my head through the media, the hip hop music, its famous rappers, their lyrics and their clips as well as the many tv series who marked a generation. Today after having spent a week in Downtown, South Central and Santa Monica my image rapidly changed. If I was aware of a certain social gap, I was profoundly shocked by the difference of the two worlds between luxury and survival and beach and street, as well as the deep social crisis in this rich region. With more than 55’000 homeless counted in 2017, Los Angeles holds the sad record of most homeless in the whole USA. The rise of 75 % of people left for themselves in 6 years, have deeply transformed the district. But even more than the sheer number of homeless people and tents on the sidewalks it was the mental state of these people that really shook me to the grounds. The big majority ravaged by drugs and mental issues really made me think about the humain condition and our social and ethical context. Through day and night from Downtown to Santa Monica, Los Angeles witnesses a complex and worrying crisis.
