Today's hospital placement was in the HDU/ICU. I saw a range of patients with all sorts of conditions from liver and kidney failure to subdural haemorrhage and faecal peritonitis, a quadraplegic following a cervical fracture, and brain hypoxia following a MI (it was a busy day). ⁣ ⁣ It was quite difficult seeing some patients and talking about their management as sometimes the prognosis was extremely poor, but I guess medicine isn't always pretty. I even visited the morgue with an F1 to identify the body of a patient who had passed away yesterday and today an ethical decision was made to withdraw treatment from a patient as a result of his deteriorating state despite all attempts to improve him.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ I'm continually grateful for the doctors I shadow which are so willing to teach and really take me under their wing. My hospital placements are infinitely more valuable because of them and I hope to return the favour to future medical students when I'm an F1.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A bit of a more serious post today but I want to share both the amazing highs of medicine and also the more difficult parts. I think it's important to be aware of both when deciding to embark on this career. ⁣⁣ ⁣ I hope you're having a wonderful day

✨HOW DO NURSES DO IT!?✨ . . This used to be a question I would ask myself ALL the time in nursing school. I remember going to my clinical rotations and being in AWE of the efficient, hard-working, fast-thinking nurses that I was surrounded by. They were nurturing to their patients, easy-going with their co-workers, cracking jokes with doctors, organizing tasks like pros, administering meds efficiently and then performing life-saving CPR all within the span of an hour. I mean if that wasn’t the embodiment of BADA$$ERY then what is!? ⚡️⚡️ There were days when we would leave clinical around 3PM and I wished I could’ve taken those nurses home with me just so they could have a minute to rest, breathe, eat, pee. I wanted to be just like them but wondered if I would be able to handle the stress. And after being a nurse myself for over five years, I’m here to tell you that YOU CAN AND WILL DO IT AND IT IS WORTH EVERY SECOND. . . You will cry in bathrooms. You will cry in your car. You will doubt yourself. You will have docs yell at you and patients dislike you. You will be tired. You will be tested. But let me tell you something babe, you are changing the world. You are blossoming into a woman that can hold her own. A woman that will stand tall in adversity and be sought out in crisis. You will experience joy and pain like you never knew. You will learn to deeply, unapologetically be who you are no matter who is around. You will make it through days that you never thought you would make it through. . . So go on with your bad self. ‍⚕️Take a look in the mirror and let that person staring back at you know that she can do anything and EVERYTHING she puts her mind to. XO -Kat
