Ok, sorry, this is an almost running unrelated post. Almost, because it’s about why I love surfing nearly as much as running. It comes down to all the lessons I learn while pursuing my passions. Running has taught me so much about myself. And so has surfing. It brutally discovers your weaknesses and forces you to face them. Here my 5 lessons I’ve been learning thanks to surfing (it’s still very much ongoing, I just started 5 years ago...): 1. Be patient. The wave comes when it comes - there’s nothing you can do about it. When you paddle a wave too early because you’re impatient, it will break over you. When you paddle a wave that is too small (which I often do - friends have called me an overexcited wave-puppy ), you loose power unnecessarily and will miss the good ones. Surfing has been teaching me to wait for the right wave and the right timing. 2. Relax. When I’m tense or too ambitious, I don’t feel the wave and the right moment, and I move the wrong way. I don’t catch any waves when I’m angry, tense, annoyed or over ambitious. It’s pretty much forcing me to let go and to be in the moment. 3. Decide. Once you want to paddle a wave you have to decide to fully go for it. If you only think ‘maybe’, you won’t get it. 4. Overcome your fear. Gosh, I often shit my pants out there (and yes, I pee in my wetsuit sometimes, all surfers do - but that’s a different story). I love how surfing challenges me. I know that if I want to progress, I need to overcome my fears. One after the other. I still got many and I know that no next step will happen if I cannot face them. The fear won’t just disappear- it has to turn into respect - because you will always keep the respect for the ocean. Pretty much work in progress. 5. Smile and have fun. I’m still a beginner and have a crappy style. And sometime that can be frustrating. But I have the best days and the most fun when I just decide to smile and enjoy every second. Because once you surf, you get this incredible, undiscribable feeling.
