We’ve been home not quite two days from being in SC for 2 weeks and life just feels so..normal. Like the girls have always been a part of our rhythms.
I’ve been asked how it was different seeing our adoptive girls for the first time vs seeing our biological boys for the first time...
With the boys, we kept their gender a surprise and when I saw them I thought, “I know you!” I could see the bits of me in their little faces.
With the girls, when I first saw them I thought,”Hey! I know you too!” But instead of me, I saw bits of their birth mother!
They were familiar yet not.
But man, the love for these girls came rushing...enveloping me, unlike it did with my boys. It was a slow love with the boys and a fast love with the girls. It felt like I had always known them and loved them...
And well, when you’ve been praying for someone since you were 12, I suppose you do love them very much!

Thanks @resilientlittlehearts for this. Such wisdom and truth in here. You know, when I’m feeling emotional I don’t want advice either. I just want someone to listen and hold a safe space for me to express myself freely. To let me feel my emotions right to their edges which is where they start to run out of steam. Why do we think our children don’t need this too? That instead they need advice and lectures and “you should have” or “you’re over-reacting” or “shhhh” or “its no big deal”. You know, if someone I expected to care about me said any of those things to me when I was upset, I’d be even more upset. I’d stop communicating with them. I’d lose my trust in them. I’d move away from them rather than towards them. Worth thinking about eh?
This week #montessorishelves is still very basic. I’m waiting for our shipment from amazon Europe for the summer so we are taking a “break” and keeping it simple with musical toys, and sensory activities. I objects matching tray is still on our shelf from last week because he still needs more time to master this skill. I have added his animals/family figures to make the process a little more interesting.
Be still, my heart. ⠀⠀
It’s hard to believe that the other two were ever this small, but it’s easy to see that they grow so much each day.
⠀⠀
Anytime that I think time is pass slowly, I take a look at my kiddos and see that is not true. I might not change much, but they grow a little taller and stronger and more independent each day. It’s been almost six years since Lisanna was born, Arrow will be five this year, and we’ve lived in Japan for almost three. How all those moments and hours and days and years have already passed, I can’t tell you. But I can tell you where they’ve gone. I’ve bottled them all up. And I have a bottle full of tears and laughter, successes and failures, love and mistakes. I’ve carefully bottled up each little milestone that each baby passes, and I’ve bottled up the celebration of every tiny first smile, every wobbly first step, and every surprising first tooth. I’ve kept every warm cuddle, every smile just for me, and every “I love you” tucked in my heart. And I keep them there, making sure that I always make the time for one more moment, one more memory, that I can add to that bottle. Because they’re worth it. Put simply - they’re my everything. .

Proud Of This Kid. Tonight Was Her Theatre Family PotLuck/Banquet. (FYI: Potlucks Have The Best Food)The Stage Has Brought This Kid Alive & She Loves It. I Had To Remind Her Tonight Though That Life’s Not About Awards Or Recognition. It’s About Loving Jesus, Doing Your Best, Being Kind To Everyone & Standing Up For What Is Right. How many times this week have you heard some variation of, “Look at me!”?
.
Do you hear it more when you’re a bit distracted? On your phone, cooking dinner, writing an email, or *gasp* trying to have a conversation with another grown up?
.
All any of us really wants is to be seen. Seen for who we truly are, deep down. Our unique talents and special skills, our best qualities, our hearts and our souls. We want to be seen for us.
.
Our children are the same. They know when we’re not giving them our full attention. We’re not fooling them with our half hearted, “Mmhmm....great job honey!” They know we’re not really ‘seeing’ them.
.
And so they keep asking. They keep demanding that we watch them do that cartwheel we’ve seen 346 times before. The flip on the trampoline, the picture they drew, the silly face they can pull.
.
They just want us to see them. To really truly see who they are deep down. To acknowledge them. And to know that we love them for it.
.
The best thing we can do in those moments, is close the laptop, put down the phone, remove everything else that’s in the way and just be fully present in that moment with them. Watch that cartwheel. Delight in it. Let your child know how much you enjoy their presence. How much you enjoy them.
.
Give them your full attention, just in that moment. This is how you say, “I see you. You are important. I love you just the way you are.”
