The perks of living here in the suburbs of DC is the amazing trails around here. Whether it's the bike trails, dirt trails or literally cutting through it all into the woods, it's fun, interesting, exciting and gorgeous. I took a few hours Friday and Saturday with my family and headed into dirt trails and beyond into the woods. That's where we found the mushrooms/fungi from my last few posts. I have many more trail pics to share and I'm not sure what else. But I thought to share this random assortment of interesting finds. It was an exciting two days for me having never walked that trail and finding so many interesting things from shrooms, bugs, flowers, plants, trees and all the gorgeous spots to take a rest in. Adventure is like life... It always stirs in the unexpected! In all the hundreds of miles of my river swims, I have seen some really odd and out-of-place articles on the riverbank. Most of the time these items were evidence of our carelessness and have made me sad. I would never have thought I would swim upon something that gave me such pause to wonder, be curious, fill me with whimsy and make me smile and laugh. But... when you find a wagon wheel (circa 1880) laying unattended at the day’s end you just have to shake your head and laugh! I guess this proved I was swimming in the WILD, WILD WEST!!! Spending a late afternoon in the delightful square in the village of Spili. There are 25 lion head fountains continuously flow clean natural spring water from the lions mouth that filters through the mountains above as the Winter snow melts. And all throughout the year water flows. You can see locals stop by to fill their water containers as you relax under the shade of the giant tree in the square enjoying a late afternoon sweet treat from a choice of cafe's. It's also well worth wandering the back lane ways and stopping at the quaint and interesting shops. You never know what surprises you will find. Or ask a local, who'll happily help you with directions through the lane ways that take you up the hill that overlooks the village and the valley.

Well, it’s been a fun morning trying to identify this gorgeous stone. Amethyst or purple fluorite? Both found in our incredible clay country here in Cornwall. It has the hardness of quartz, whereby is does not scratch with a knife blade and the distinct purple colour of amethyst (which is hard to capture), but who knows for sure?
