Thanks for having us this December @wellington_newzealand for the Advent Calender. Keeping it local and supporting art and small business here in this amazing little city. My piece represents the waterfront and I was able to include a homage to the big rocks that my dad (who died many years ago) installed as sculptures in Waitangi park and also 'Solace In The Wind' by talented @maxpatteart and the crocodile riding crocodile bike for my friends at @crocshake. Silhouette details created using @fortyonehundred mural pens Thanks to @sean_duffell @xoehallartist @_dside @micastill and the team at WREDA. I have been slowly savouring the articles in my beautiful Spring edition of Slightly Foxed. One article particularly caught my eye ('In the Eye of the Storm' by Posy Fallowfield) as it concerns the book 'In Hazard' by Richard Hughes. Posy shares her thoughts of 'In Hazard' which she describes as "an extraordinary read". She provides some fascinating background about how Hughes was approached by a shipping line to record the dramatic story of the steamship 'Phemius' which endured a Caribbean hurricane in 1932 and lived to tell the tale. Hughes created a fictitious captain & crew, and renamed the steamship 'Archimedes', but attempted to record the storm accurately. Posy describes Hughes's writing style, with his novelistic touch & powers of description, and she makes you want to pick up the book immediately and ride the storm.
⛵
When the original 'Phemius' inadvertently braved the hurricane in 1932, she and her crew miraculously survived. This brought to mind how badly things could have ended, and I was reminded of an article I read in Vanity Fair magazine last year written by William Langewiesche, in which he explored the events leading up to the sinking of the 'El Faro' cargo ship, along with all her crew, after it sailed in to the eye of a Category 3 hurricane on the windward side of the Bahamas. It is a chilling account, especially because this disaster took place so recently in 2015, in an era of satellite phones, meteorological models and data, and hurricane forecasts.
When the wreck was eventually found, the digital voyage data recorder was retrieved. Langewiesche explains the recorder "contained the final 26 hours of conversations among nine doomed people on the bridge". In his article he uses much of the transcript, and it makes for horrifying reading as you feel like you are there on the bridge with them, watching the events unfold with an inexplicable sense of inevitability. If you google 'Vanity Fair' and 'El Faro', you can find the full article online. It is well worth reading this gripping account, and seeing how "a cascade of small errors, failures and coincidences" can result in such a wretched 'system accident' such as this.
You may have heard Scott and Kelli reference this video. We love seeing (and hearing) kids singing about their faith in the midst of a storm.

This video moved us this week. Humbled to hear these kids sing @ryansmusic’s #eyeofthestorm. We join these kids in prayer for everyone in the path of #hurricaneflorence. by @chris_n_paris at Wayne Christian School in Goldsboro, NC.
