Who’s a clever boy then can’t believe this worked! What you are looking at will eventually be my fancy new crucible furnace for melting non ferrous and cast iron! She will be rated to 1700°c and run on waste oil through an injection system of my own design. For the body I took the core elements from MYFORDBOY but altered it to include my own revisions. After the fuel system, this lid lifting mechanism was the toughest nut to crack. When the foot pedal is depressed it pushes the lid directly upwards (to avoid friction damage to the refractory hot-face) then pivots it nearly out of the way, so the crucible can be lifted out hands free. The swivel mechanism is buried within the 30mm ø lid support. Ignore the heavy blocks of iron on top- they are there to simulate ballast. Making a Toaster Oven Rubber Mold: I have been experimenting lately with using two types of silicone mold rubber when I need a nice pliable inside but want the outside strong. It also saves money since the reddish rubber is less expensive. With the toaster oven set at 350* F for about 10 minutes prior to allow warm up, I show the steps involved on how I set it up. Step 1 starts with adding talc to the steel frame and back side of the red rubber so it doesn't stick. Step 2 uses the green which gets no talc. It needs to adhere to the red and form around the item for cutting later. The item is pushed into the rubber. Step 3 is placement of the second layer of green snuggly around the item. Step 4 is placing the outside red piece on which has talc added to the outside and to the steel plate to prevent sticking. Step 5 the top steel plate is put on and tightened down evenly and then placed in the pre heated toaster oven. After approximately 50 minutes of vulcanizing and then cooling, Step 6 is removal from the frame. Step 7 is to cut away the excess rubber around the edge using a scissor. Step 8 is then to cut the mold in half using a simple wavy line with a scalpel. This helps keep the two halves lined up when injecting. Step 9 shows the 2 halves cut apart, and Step 10 shows an Injected wax. My experiment was a success and now I can easily mass produce this flower pattern using vacuum casting. After a couple of questions about the tool castings being milled in the previous post I thought I’d put up a few pictures of the wax models they use to cast them. For anyone not familiar with investment casting/lost wax process here’s a brief outline. The heated wax is injected into an aluminium mould under pressure then the model is removed and around 100 attached to a tree like structure and covered in ceramic slurry. Once that’s dry the wax is melted out leaving voids that are filled with molten metal poured down through the trunk of the upside down “tree”. When the metal has cooled the ceramic is broken off and the finished castings are cut off from the tree, annealed, sand blasted and then sent to me The Diamond Tool Holders are done in 4140 high tensile steel and the Turnado tool posts are done in SG (spherical graphite) cast iron. Both are sent for a black oxide surface treatment after machining but for some reason the cast iron goes a nice dark brown color rather than black.
