John Frederick Lewis - A Lady Receiving Visitors (c. 1873) - Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, US ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Painted by the English Orientalist artist John Frederick Lewis (1804-1876). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Lewis is considered one of the most important Victorian artists to visit the Middle East. The son of Frederick Christian Lewis, a successful engraver, he gained early success as a painter of animals and sporting subjects. In 1840-1 Lewis travelled, via Italy, Greece and Turkey, to Cairo, where he remained for the next ten years. Lewis made nearly six hundred watercolours and drawings throughout the decade. These works, together with the Oriental costumes and artefacts he collected, became the foundation of his paintings of desert encampments, harem interiors and mosques that he made and exhibited after his return to London in 1851. Lewis worked in watercolour from the 1830s, but from the late 1850s returned to working in oils in the hope of making more money and on the advice of John Ruskin. His paintings, however, retained their minuteness of detail." نقاشان شرق‌گرا که شامل نقاشان بریتانیایی، اتریشی، آلمانی و به ویژه فرانسوی بودند، مکتب مستقلی نداشتند و مناظری از خاورمیانه را به شیوه‌های گوناگون در میان دیگر آثارشان می‌گنجاندند. در نیمه دوم قرن نوزدهم نگارخانه‌های پاریس، انباشته از تابلوهای شرقی بود که استقبال از آنها به تأسیس «سالن نقاشان شرق گرای فرانسه» در حدود صد و بیست و پنج سال پیش انجامید. شرق، مردم اروپای قرن نوزدهم را شیفته خود ساخت؛ هیاهو و جنب‌وجوش بازارهای شرقی، کوچه‌های تماشایی شهرهای کهن، مردم در گروه‌های مختلف بالباس‌های رنگارنگ در روزهای جشن مذهبی، کاشی‌های معرق تزیینی مساجد، مناره‌های بلند آن‌ها، بیابان‌های پهناور در زیر آفتاب سوزان. این تصاویر جهان اسلام، الهام‌بخش‌ترین جاندارترین و هیجان‌انگیزترین تابلوهای نقاشان آکادمیک آن عصر بودند. استعمار کشورهای شرقی توسط اروپاییان، سفرهای پی در پی آنها به این کشورها را یکی از دلایل شکل‌گیری این مکتب نقاشی در اروپا می‌دانند. نقاشان اروپایی در پی آزادی عمل بودند و مشرق زمین به آنها این آزادی را تقدیم می‌کرد. دیگر نیازی نبود تا به صورت تابلوهای تاریخی و اساطیری یا تمثیلی، هنر درخشان خود را عیان سازند. در آن زمان بر حسب مقیاس‌های زیباشناسی رسمی، دنیای عادی، عامیانه یا تصنعی به نظر می‌رسید. اما در شرق، فرهنگی می‌یافتند که از زمان کتاب مقدس تاکنون تغییر نکرده بود و نقاشان آکادمیک می‌توانستند موضوع‌های واقع‌گرایانه فراوانی را از آنجا استخراج کنند. #frederickarthurbridgman #fabiofabbi #johnfredericklewis #painting #نقاشی
