During a visit to The Royal London Hospital to open two new buildings on 21st May 1887, Princess Alexandra requested to meet Joseph Merrick, known as the Elephant Man. After the tour, the Royal Party went to his rooms for an introduction. The Princess of Wales shook his hand and sat with him, an experience that left him overjoyed. The Princess of Wales gave him a signed photograph of herself and sent him a Christmas card each year up until 1889. Merrick died on 11th April 1890. A character that has cropped up a few times in my career is The Elephant Man. I remember the movie coming out and seeing the academy award were Chris Tucker and his makeup got a mention but no award. I believe it would be the recognition of that makeup and just how significant it was in the David Lynch movie that would prompt the Academy to create a makeup Academy award category the following year. That would be won by Rick Baker for American Werewolf In London. I managed to get a hold of Chris Tuckers address and corresponded with him for a couple of years before finally getting to meet him when I was 15. Seeing the bust he created of his makeup on John Hurt in person, as well as the copy he’d made of the plaster cast of the real Joseph Merrick was mind blowing to me. I eventually got to work for Chris in 1987. Fast forward 13years and I’m co-designing the makeup fx on “From Hell” directed by the wonderful Hughes Brothers; Alan and Albert. The producer is telling me that they thinking of dropping the scene with the Elephant Man as they assume it will be too costly…. Naturally I offer to create the makeup for a silly cheap price. There’s absolutely no way I’m passing up the opportunity to create this makeup full body. There’s no lines so they agree to let us cast the performer from our crew. The wonderful Ant Parker accepts the challenge. I sculpted the head and Ant and several others sculpt the body. We apply it on location in Prague at the Museum. It’s very fitting that we’re working in a Victorian era basement room full of Taxidermy animals, specimen jars and old books. It’s a 4am start and the makeup takes six hours.
