I don’t think there is any other country in the world that was so addicted to the Opel Kadett as the Netherlands. It became the best selling car in my country around 1970… and held that position for over 30 years, until 2001. The Kadett was a pinnacle of Dutch culture, right up there with cheese, windmills and tulips. Being the king of Excel that I am, I put together a small chart of the Kadett sales figures in the Netherlands between 1983 and 1991, when the Astra replaced the Kadett E. I compared Kadett sales to those of the VW Golf and the Ford Escort, the perennial numbers 2 and 3. And to make it a fair game I added Jetta sales to the Golf and Orion sales to the Escort. As you can see, the Kadett really takes off when the E-Kadett arrives. 1 in 10 new cars was a Kadett in the mid ’80s. Golf/Jetta and Escort/Orion managed to do only half of that. After 1990 the Kadett loses ground (while remaining the most sold car). That’s when @opelnl starts launching special editions, like this Kadett Life. It had some nice extras, like tinted glass, different upholstery, body coloured rear view mirrors and different silver coloured wheels. The Astra took over from the E-Kadett in 1991. It was a big succes, but it never came above an 8% market share (in 1992). That would be the beginning of the end for Opel in the Netherlands. They hit rock bottom in 2015, with just 5.63% of our market, but have found their way back since. Opels current share is around 8%. . Opel Kadett 1.4i L, 15 June 1990.
