Having been kept illegally as a pet and fed the wrong diet, it was critical that she received a nutrient rich diet to correct any nutrient deficiencies she could have experienced. Founding member, director and wildlife rehabilitation specialist, Nicci Wright, who is also a member of the IUCN Otter Specialist Group as well as the African Advisory Group has identified the perfect slow release site for her to ensure that she lives successfully in the wild, once truly free. OTTERLY ADORABLE UPDATE! A few weeks ago, we introduced you to this African clawless otter (Aonyx capensis) who was kept illegally as a pet, and confiscated by the local SPCA. While in captivity, this little otter cub was fed the incorrect diet. During the past few weeks, it was critical for us to ensure that we provided her with the right nutrition to ensure that she would grow and meet all the necessary developmental milestones. We asked you to assist us, with our #OneMeal campaign, which helped us greatly! She is still receiving bottles, however, she is slowly being weaned off her bottles as she consumes (and becomes more interested) in eating tilapia! SMALL AND FIESTY! This Greater red musk shrew (Crocidura flavescens) was dug up by a gardener, and subsequently brought to us - so young, that her eyes were still closed! We raised this little baby, introduced her to natural food sources, and watched as she developed and grew. Once she was self sufficient, she was released. SAVING A SPECIES: We’re currently fighting for the life of a baby Ground Temminck’s pangolin that was fortunate to have been saved from the illegal wildlife trade. Having been starved for an extended period of time, she is highly compromised. We are doing everything we can to try and save her. Thanks to Dr Carter and Sr Serfontein at Fourways Vet Hospital for helping us with another world first for pangolins - placing a gastric peg tube. This goes directly into her stomach, which assists us in feeding her easily while we focus on monitoring and improving her condition. SMALL PATIENT WITH A BIG PERSONALITY: This little South African porcupine (Hystrix africaeaustralis) was found wandering around in a suburban garden after a massive storm. It is suspected that she was unsettled and flushed from her burrow. Efforts to reunite her with her mother were unsuccessful, and as such she will spend some time with us. She is currently drinking a special milk formula, and beginning to nibble on natural food sources. Once she is fully weaned, and is able to fend for herself, she will be released into a suitable area. Our thanks to Grant Fairley for rescuing this little porcupine. FROG PRINCESS: We received this badly injured female Giant bullfrog after she was hit by a car while crossing the road. X-rays revealed a fractured pelvis, tibia and lower jaw. We called on the expertise of exotic specialist vet Dr Dorianne Elliott from the @birds_and_3xotics at Onderstepoort. She was delighted to assist with the frog’s fracture repair, who in the meantime was affectionately named Fiona by Dr Elliott’s vet nurse, Sr Soné. Her broken lower jaw that was fixed with a wire and her broken right hind leg was fixed with an external fixation. The multiple pelvis fractures healed with time as she was kept still. Fiona recovered well and healed beautifully. Her pins were removed, and she was released onto a safe bullfrog breeding property. Please drive carefully in and around wildlife areas, especially during rainy periods. You may not know what is around you on the roads and could accidentally hurt or kill some of our precious wildlife.
