Our planting season is officially over, and It's time for us to get a proper shower a good night sleep and plan our next adventure in which we will be reunited together as Globe Jumpers. Destination to be revealed in our next post. Tree planting can be an incredibly transformative experience for many if not most planters. The day you plant your last tree, feels like the day you graduated from college. It's an incredible achievement. Planting is for people who want to live in a different way, who thrive on pushing themselves in unusual ways, it’s not necessarily viewed as an environmental one, but you are definitely doing your fair share in helping the environment It’s an experience that is hard to put in words. It’s deeply meditative, and an opportunity to commune with yourself and nature as well as build deep bonds with other members of your crew through hardship. Everyday, you fluctuate between wanting to leave, and never wanting to leave, said almost every tree planter!! IMAGINE WAKING UP at sunrise ☀️ in a camp a couple hundred of miles away from the nearest small town. Trek even further into the wilderness until you reach a man-made clearing. Throw on gear that weighs roughly 50 pounds. Make your way through a steep and treacherous terrain, bending down ever so often to tuck a spruce or fir seedling steadily into the ground. Continue until sundown. Repeat the next day. And the next. And the next. And the next...For an entire summer, while insects feast on your exposed flesh. Such is the reality of tree planting, a job that employs thousands of young and old Canadians every year. It’s an experience that is hard to put in words. It’s deeply meditative yet overwhelming, and an opportunity to commune with yourself and nature as well as build deep bonds with other members of your crew through hardship.

Planting is for people who want to live in a different way, who thrive on pushing themselves in unusual ways. The day-to-day is miserable, but the whole is special ⭐️ There are an estimated 6,000 workers across Canada’s vast timberlands who plant around half a billion trees each year. Nearly half of these trees are planted in British Columbia and Alberta, where lumber companies harvest large tracts of forest for wood pulp and construction material. With all the technology we have, there still isn’t a more effective way to do this job than by giving a human being a shovel. Can you earn big money from planting trees ? Tree planting is very strenuous and seriously tough. Tree planters can walk on average 15-16km and plant around 2,000 trees a day per day. Workers can expend the caloric equivalent of a person who has run a marathon, having to heave 50 lbs bags of saplings hooked to their belt all day while they dig, plant and repeat for ten hours, often on a four days on, one day off rota. Planters tend to get paid per tree planted, meaning hard work is rewarded with hard cash, and there’s fierce competition amongst the crew to be the highest planting worker. This also means that it can take a few weeks to build your earnings and working for more than one season is often encouraged. Pay can also depend on the contract, but one basic rate is at least CAD 0.10 per tree. The harder the land is, the higher the rate is. Keep planting!! Photo credit: @t0d0r0v

Tree planing it's a love hate relationship job!! Is planting trees an actual full time job? Who employs you to do it? Are you guys volunteering or actually making money? Is it a Physical and Mental job? How many trees do you plant per day? Where do you sleep? What do you eat? How do you wash yourself? These are all questions that we will be answering in the few upcoming weeks. Tree planing, is the kind of job that everyone dreams of doing. Living in the bush freely, one with nature. Traveling across Canada discovering the wild side of the country. Chilling at night around fire camps, drinking beer and having memorable conversation with fellow planters. But when it comes to the actual job itself, it's one hard physical and mental challenge, that can beat you down. Whether it's rain or shine, hail or snow, hot or cold, you are out there 9,10,11 hours by yourself, making sure that you are hitting every spot on the ground with a tree. Here are some of the shots we took during our planting season during our summer 2017. Don't pick a job with great vacation time. Pick one that doesn't need escaping from #TreePlanting #KeepJumping The Heli Show is ON!!! We have to admit, taking a chopper to go to work every morning is something extremely cool. In some planting contracts, the only way to access land is by flying planters out. It's a job that demands immense efforts in logistics, planning and requires lots of man/woman power. From a camp supervisor who ensures that all operations are running smoothly, especially the safety of the planters, to a crew boss, who's main task is to guide and ensures that planters are working effectively. A deliver, that makes sure that trees are available and delivered on each block. A checker that goes over the land to check over the density and tree qualities. Let's not forget the cook, who ensures that planters are well fed day and night. A Safety officer, who ensures the safely and well being of the camp and planters, and finally a rookie mentor, who's main job, is to train, empower and help the rookies (First season planters) to stay focused. A tree planting camp can contain between 30 to 80 planters.
