May 3, 2019 When eyes reflect their legacy Where does colonization fit inside history? What do you say to the person/persons who come into your house and rape your grandmother, mother, sister, nieces, father, brother and nephew - in front of you? What do you do when after they have left you empty, but continue to be the hands that control the basic resources that you need to survive everyday. How do you forgive or do you? Fast forward, and you find your community again under attack through torture and murder. You are fighting for your civil rights. You fight back and as a result your people are either killed or imprisoned for decades. The leaders in your community are either assassinated or imprisoned for life. There is a reconciliation, but there is no reparation, no consequences, and barely any jail time for the perpetrators. They own most of the country’s resources. Meanwhile you live in squalor. You go to work every day for the same people who for your whole life has held their position of power over you. This week image was shot in Kliptown, Soweto for the @theleica10 photo series. The Kliptown street markets #traveltuesday ——————————————————————————— Kliptown is a suburb of the township of Soweto outside of Johannesburg, South Africa. This area is home to many historic events during the apartheid, including the house where Nelson Mandela lived prior to serving time on Robben Island. The streets are filled with vendors and shops but there’s a different way of life in the shanty towns of Soweto that is not often seen.. despite having limited luxuries (electricity & running water), the people are more rich in spirit and heart than the wealthier communities up the street. The best way to explore these areas are with a guide who grew up living there
