Not the most exciting whisky in the world but still an interesting collaboration between Diageo and Game of Thrones nonetheless. The last couple of seasons of the TV behemoth went slightly off the boil without source material but this marketing machine kept plowing on! My first experience of any of this range was the frozen White Walker at the now defunct Worship Street Whistling Shop. I wouldn’t recommend that blend but I’d attended an absolutely brilliant night of stories and blends at the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Halloween party with the legendary @colindunnwhisky at @barblackrock and we spilled onto the next bar after the event. Back to the whisky at hand, the Game of Thrones release did create a real buzz, lots of people collecting the houses/bottles and utterly insane auction prices for full sets. From the full range the Clynelish and Lagavulin seemed the most interesting bottlings to me personally. A unusual, near cask strength NAS Clynelish and a randomly aged 9 year old Lagavulin, both unfortunately heavy on unnecessary caramel colouring. However this is a large (limited) release for the mass market so I suppose I can’t complain too much! I absolutely loved the release of the Lagavulin 8 a couple years back and I’m very pleased it’s now a core bottling, I actually prefer the more youthful 8 year old to the classic 16. So there’s at least some interesting official releases in this range. With the end of the TV series, with no more iron throne. *Spoiler* As a local side note, a lad who went to school in nearby Faversham became King, in an ultimately disappointing finale. I’m sure there will be plenty of spin offs and prequels but I hope this marketing campaign brings a positive new audience to enjoy and share whisky rather than leaving their bottles sitting silently, unloved, collecting dust on shelves. There’s plenty of old and rare whisky doing just that already. In honour of my my 41st birthday today I was given the green light to attend a most magnificent whisky tasting event @thewhiskyevent to say it was a privilege is an understatement. To taste such fine, rare and expensive whiskies is something that wont be experienced, and when it occurs it will be seared into ones memory. There were so many phenomenal whiskies but here is one. The 40 year bunnahabhain just floated down gently like a feather. Lagavulin Day 2019☘️ . . It’s no secret that the warehouse tasting with Iain McArthur is one of the best you can go for . . The lineup was tempting and the 21yr and 22yr old single casks were out of this world. . . There is a new chance to bottle your own whisky to take it home from Islay . .
