Ring-billed Gulls are starting to be seen with regularity again in parking lots and parks of Muskoka this time of year. A welcomed sign of spring! The Ring-billed Gull is one of North America’s more numerous gull species as it has learned to adapt well to human environments. This species breeds in the southern Canadian provinces as well as much of the United States and can be seen in much of this area throughout the year. This being said, it leaves the northern most part of its range every winter as water freezes over and quality habitat becomes more scarce. Moving as far south as Central America during the winter, this is a welcomed bird as summer approaches. Next time you are in a city park or pulling through the drive-thru keep your eye out for this beautiful yet disrespected bird. Did you know there’s no such thing as a “seagull?” Gulls are a wide genus of species and though many are found along coasts, they are adaptable and opportunistic. Many species are found far inland and are right at home around human settlement, never seeing the ocean! One species commonly found inland is the Ring-billed Gull. This is a small to medium sized gull, often found in parking lots, garbage dumps, and freshly plowed fields. They eat a wide-range of foods and thrive where human development affords them the opportunity to scavenge trash and steal from us! This non-breeding, sub-adult Ring-billed Gull was found in the road in New Milford, and appeared unable to fly. Upon exam, we learned he was suffering from an old puncture wound on his chest that probably made flight painful. We are treating with pain medication and antibiotics, and giving him plenty of good food to eat in the meantime. Gulls are a vibrant part of our ecosystem and have adapted and thrived alongside humans. Though they may seem like "pests," they play an important role in cleaning up our urban areas.
