Lorquin's Admiral Probably a temporary post but I wanted to share this collage I made!! Many butterfly caterpillars are elusive and rarely seen. This is one of them, which is why it was such an incredible experience to be able to see it and photograph it in larval, pupal, and adult stages! I often rear caterpillars from captive silk moths, which I love to do, but not much compares to the excitement of discovering and rearing a caterpillar from the wild that you've never seen before!! Here is a portion of the life cycle of Limenitis lorquini, the Lorquin's Admiral butterfly. (1) Fifth instar caterpillar. (2) macro of the caterpillar's head. (3) the chrysalis. (4) the beautiful adult butterfly. With its gaudy appearance and bold stance on top of a leaf, one might think that this tiny metalmark moth (Brenthia sp.) would make easy prey for a small predator like a jumping spider. However, if you blur your eyes just a little, you might be able to see why jumping spiders hesitate before attacking these moths: their wing patterns look remarkably similar to another jumping spider. Note particularly the “fuzzy legs” (dark bands) held to the side and the eyespots with reflections at the top. I found this Painted Lady Butterfly on the bottom of a slide. It had a hurt wing. I took it over to a flower so it could drink the nectar and hopefully survive.

Birth of a male Hyalophora cecropia. This birth was totally unexpected! I raised the caterpillar last year and I found it strange that the chrysalis was so long to hatch .. so I forgot it in a cupboard and by chance, two days ago, I opened the cupboard and he was there, hatched, wings spread ... it was beautiful! So, what happened ? is that this butterfly goes through a diapaus during the winter.
