Remember the word “gone” is misleading as plastic will simply degrade into microplastics, the long term impact of which on human health can't be good. It's pretty clear that we need to stop buying single-use or unnecessary plastic. Please think about this when shopping for gifts for Mother's Day, birthdays or other special events. Balloons NEVER go away and what's more can kill our precious marine life if they get blown into the sea. Think about how you wrap your presents - I'd be very happy with a sustainable gift in a cute reusable bag, no sellotape, no plastic coated wrapping paper (or worse still with glitter) and no cellophane packaging. There are eco versions of plastic combs, water bottles and coffee cups - we have a huge selection of reusable items that make the perfect gift. FACTS 14 billion single-use coffee pods are sold every year all over the world. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last year, enough pods were sold that if they were placed end-to-end, they would circle the globe 10.5 times. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ☠️ Coffee pods are contributing to a global environmental disaster, with billions of the sleek aluminium and plastic capsules ending up in landfill in America, Europe and Australia each year. Producing coffee pods is also SUPER HARMFUL: aluminum refining produces red mud, a toxic byproduct that leaks in our rivers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ The global coffee pods and capsules market was valued at USD 14.74 billion in 2017, and is expected to register a CAGR of 7.1% by 2023. The global coffee pod and capsule market has ballooned so much in recent years that it is expected to overtake instant and ground coffee. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ❌ Coffee pods can't be recycled easily because they are often made of a mixture of plastic and aluminium. The two materials must be separated, and this cannot be done in standard recycling plants.Aluminium coffee pods reportedly take between 150 to 500 years to decompose. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ #iamacapsulekiller

We’re so thrilled that such a big city finally takes action to solve the dramatic single-use problem // @ecopandas ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 8 months ago, we asked Paris’ Mayor, @annehidalgo, to ban all the plastic single use items - at least from the City Council. Truth is we never got any answer… ⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the European parliament has voted to ban single-use plastic cutlery, cotton buds, straws and stirrers as part of a sweeping law against plastic waste that despoils beaches and pollutes oceans, we hope this is something she has in mind. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ For what New York is concerned: the Big Apple joins California and Hawaii to ban single-use plastic bags. The ban, which is part of the state budget bill, would forbid retailers from providing shoppers with single-use bags. It would take effect next March. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, an estimated 23 billion plastic bags are used by residents across the state annually. New York City alone uses more than 10 billion single-use plastic bags a year, accounting for 1,700 tons of residential garbage every week. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last year New York banned styrofoam, which includes takeout containers, polystyrene cups, packing peanuts and foam plates, bowls & trays.
